RE-UPLOAD: The Sisters Of Mercy - Whistle Test Studios, London, UK - 02.04.1985 (Flac/HQ MPEG Video)

Thanks to the original uploader.

Original Info File:

The Whistle Test tracks come from a very clean vinyl bootleg 7". Sound quality is excellent and the performances are complete; I have even restored the beginning of First and Last and Always.

Whistle Test Studios, London (BBC TV)
1985-04-02 (transmission 1985-04-04)

01. First and Last and Always
02. Marian

As a bonus I've included video footage of the Whistle Test performance. Because it came with very muffled sound, I have synched the images up with the excellent audio recordings from the bootleg 7" - to very good effect, I might add. The picture quality is great, too (courtesy of Solitude - many thanks, P.!), though occasionally there's some static and picture travelling (but never do sound & vision go out of synch). Also, the beginnings of both tracks and the end of Marian are truncated. Still, there's plenty left to give you a fine impression of the band in full action! See screenshots.

technical data for the mpg-file:

Aspect Ratio: 4x3
Resolution: 704x576
Video Type: Interlaced MPEG2
Video Bitrate: 9.578 Mbps
Audio Type: MPEG Audio
Audio Bitrate: 256 Kbps

Enjoy!

Tape story:
This is my first recording "abroad" (I mean, out of Italy).
The venue is a small club at Lisbon port area.
I arrived early so I could check the spot with the better sound, about 10 m from the stage.
People completely into the show with acceptable clapping and someone at my left singing (very good!) the first Closer tracks.
Another very good recording but again (as in Roncade) several small dropouts appeared.
I am sorry for this because in the meanwhile I have taped Depeche Mode, Editors and Franz Ferdinand without problems... seems Peter Hook has a "special" effect on my equipment.
Since I have found the mic's cable severely twisted, maybe my occasional movement (I was taping, but I was also into the show) were "registered" as excessive tension by the cable plugin... just an hypotesis.
Anyway the problem is limited to only four tracks (5, 13, 16 and 18) and the quality of the recording has been substantially preserved.

What about the show?
It was my second Peter Hook And The Light show in two months (the first one was the Movement/PCL set in Roncade, taped too).
I flew to Lisbon just in the afternoon and I enjoyed a 2-day holiday in this fine and friendly town.
I have decided to give me a chance to attend to the Unknown Pleasures/Closer set because I missed it in Italy two years ago and I feared this was one of the last chance to catch it... at a reasonable distance.
As a matter of fact I have really appreciated the previous show and my positive feeling was confirmed by this one.
Another quality show, with one of the longest setlist ever (32 live tracks).
Peter Hook And The Light has won the challenge with its genuine passion (more than a tribute band) and offers 2 hours and half shows at an unusual low price (less than 20 euros in Roncade and 25 euros in Lisbon).
I have never thought to listen Decades played live by one of the original JD members (that songs really moved me and is worth the money spent for the flight and the hotel).
And it is my great pleasure to share this recording with you.

Technical notes:
- The total running time of the recording was 2:56:32; I have cut the first 4:44 mins of intro recorded music from PA and the last useless 6 secs reducing the master firstly to 2:51:42.
- Secondly, I have amplified both channels (+9.0 dB)
- Thirdly, I have divided the recording in three separate parts, "New Order" set (0:39:08), "Closer" set (0:43:51) and "Unknown Pleasures + Encore" set (1:10:02), deleting about 15:15 and 3:25 mins of recorded music from PA between the three sets.
- "New Order" set: I have faded-out the last 10 secs.
- "Closer" set: I have faded-in the first 5 secs and faded-out the last 10 secs.
- "Unknown Pleasures + Encore" set: I have faded-in the first 5 secs and faded-out the last 10 secs.
- If you burn to audio CD, you will need 2 CDs, but I suggest 3 CDs (CD1: 01-08; CD3: 09-17; CD2: 18-34)

Please do not sell nor convert to mp3 for distribution (mp3 only for personal use!)
Feel free to share in the way you prefer, but please share this fileset as originally torrented (so preserve file integrity!)

The Sisters Of Mercy - Sportpaleis, Gent, Belgium - 16.05.1991 (Flac)

NOTE: By some stupid reason, the photos that were originally on the fileset are missing from the RAR file... To make up for that, I treated them in Photoshop (they're quite better now), and posted them in full resolution, please copy them to the recording folder after downloading.

Thanks to the original uploader.

Original Info File:

Tape received in my trading period from end 80's until mid 90's.

As shown on concert ticket I've included, this concert should have taken place on
15th November 1990 in Deinze, Het Brielpoort (an awful hall where acoustic does not exist...).
The concert was eventually cancelled and tickets remained valid. The new date was later
announced as 16th May 1991 and fortunately location was changed to Gent, Sportpaleis.

This is the only gig I saw in this venue and it was really OK regarding the sound but also the
configuration. People could access either the playground area (standing) or the balconeys (sitting),
but most insteresting was that between both, there was a velodrome. During "Vision Thing", Andrew
disappeared off the stage and started running, singing all along the velodrome with people going mad
and trying to approach the barriers along the velodrome where Andrew was standing. I could take
a picture of this particular moment and this is also included in the post, along with some others.
Be indulgent regarding the quality as this was taken with my old pocket cam.

Unknown recording equipment and it should be a lowgen copy.

Very good sound quality and I processed a slight hiss reduction + some fade in / out (several tape
or recording flips)

The first Peel session, courtesy of nashspacerocket. "Sanity Carrer" and "Love as a Positive Narcotic" are unreleased. "Woman's Own" was released in the single, but this version sounds better than the released in the official CD. The fourth track would be "We're so Happy", but the version on the CD sound good so there really no point in sharing it. New recording of the digital broadcast-

Another master from Egg_Crisis from the Loreley 1992 festival.

Cassette(aud,master,That's EX90) > wav > Soundforge > CDWave > split on sector boundaries > flac(6)

Recorded with Sony Recording Walkman WM-BF67 & t-shaped external mic (Eurochannels Stereo Mic EMC3630)

Recording had many clicks, most of which I was able to remove manually in Soundforge. It's not perfect but it's a huge improvement on the original. After that day the microphone never worked again just making a lot of clicks, I think water got in it. It was raining heavily that day. As well as the faulty mic, the mic's extension wire had a dodgy connection (later for the Sisters the right channel became completely disconnected).

I was moving through the crowd, sound quality improves from halfway through the 2nd song.

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Acton Town Hall, London, UK -15.11.2002 (FLAC)

From the Dave Sez archive: On the ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ tour in November 2002, Joe included this benefit gig for the members of the striking Fire Brigades Union. Mick Jones was in the audience and joined Joe onstage for the last three songs, the first time the two had shared a stage since their last performance together in the Clash in 1983. Originally a fan club only release, the CD is now out of print and has taken on legendary and essential status for all Clash fans, as the sound quality and mix are superb.  It is a fine memento from Joe’s final tour deserving a permanent official release. Joe died from an undiscovered congenital heart defect just over a month later on 22nd December 2002.

NOTES:

After a lacklustre performance at Crossing Border in The Hague in November,
I'm hoping Warpaint are well-rested and capable of better tonight.

The trouble is that you can't build a solid structure on a poor foundation.
Even if the band are at the top of their game tonight, it's a game built atop
weak songs and even weaker voices.

Why is it that so many American women have high-pitched, squeaky voices? You
encounter the phenomenon everywhere, of course, but it's much more pronounced
amongst American women. Why?

To my surprise, googling 'why american women have squeaky voices' actually
turns up a large amount of very interesting literature on the subject.

Warpaint have a full complement of such voices and, all too often, use them to
sing in unison. The net effect is akin to a collaboration between Pinky &
Perky (American readers may substitute the Chipmunks here) and a couple of
Smurfs. Rather than make for a fuller sound, it merely underscores the
inherent weakness of the individual voices.

Do you remember those talking dolls of yore with a plastic ring dangling from
their back? If you pulled the ring, a cord would extend, and as you released
the ring, the cord would slowly retract inside the doll, while the doll
muttered child-pleasing banalities in an irritatingly squeaky voice.

I can't help but be reminded of those dolls as I watch Warpaint perform to a
sold-out Paradiso tonight.

I don't mean to be unkind, but whatever musical qualities this band may
possess, an ability to sing is glaringly conspicuous by its absence.

Let's move on to the music.

On the subject of the songs, I can be brief: drab and uninspired.

To describe the band's sound, a single word will suffice: derivative. The
flanged bass is 'Tocsin' era Xmal Deutschland. The chorused guitars are
distilled from Robert Smith in both of his well-known guises.

It's as if someone exhumed the corpse of one of the countless forgotten goth
bands of the eighties, jolted it back to life with a defibrillator and then
sent it out on the live circuit to impress anyone too young and insufficiently
inquisitive to have heard it all before.

Sadly, I'm too old and informed to be anything other than bored rigid tonight.
The gig drags on and on, but the young whippersnappers around me lap it up as
if present at the gig of their life; and perhaps they are.

On the plus side, there's the rock solid rhythm section of bassist Jenny Lee
Lindberg and drummer Stella Mozgawa. They truly are a formidable partnership
and very enjoyable to watch. The trouble is, they're in the wrong band. They
need to ditch the chaff at the front and start anew.

Sorry, but someone has to say it. Cruel to be kind and all that.

Based on the reactions of those around me, the band put in a sterling
performance. From where I'm standing, however, it's an average performance by
an average band. Not even being told that I'm beautiful, with all the
exaggerated false sentiment so beloved of Americans, can lift my spirits.

And so we come to the recording. Rest assured that I have put the same effort
into making and mastering this recording as I would into one that I was
enthusiastic about. My opinion of the band has no impact on the quality of the
recording and should have no bearing on your ability to enjoy it.

This is an EQ'd version of a pre-FM download, albeit with 1969 added in (it was missing from the download version) - I shared this back in 2011, thought it was time to share it again, here.

This latter version was clearer but had very excessive treble, with a little
apparent treble distortion. This noise does seem to stem from the original
recording, as I noticed it was there in the background on my tape version, but
buried under tape hiss (which isn't bad on my original seed, but it is there).

I have mixed this to reduce that treble noise so that now I find it an ideal
match between my original tape version - slightly hissy, but very gutsy - and
the clearer version - very clear, too much treble / treble noise.

I think this sounds very good now, as good as the KBFH (official) CD version of
the Boston Channel 1988 concert to my ears.

Enjoy.

Young Marble Giants - Berkeley Square, Berkeley, California, USA - 25.10.1980 (Flac)

Very Good FM broadcast. Another tape from the Foxtrotter archives. Thanks to Creatured for sharing it on Dime.

I think he taped this himself off the radio.  Seems to be incomplete too ,missing 3 songs.
If you have the complete version, share it.

I think this show was the same as the Cabaret Voltaire I seeded
a little while back.

I believe Our Daughters Wedding played this night too. unless it was at another venue onthe same night. Yes,i have the ODW show too, but that is going to be awile before i can seed that.
