NOTES:
Sophya are supporting The Chameleons Vox on their two Dutch dates in Utrecht
and Apeldoorn. I'm attending both.
Sophya look and sound like a hundred other bands signed to tiny labels that
promote third-rate post-gothic bedroom projects under frivolous descriptors
like 'darkwave'.
It's not that they're awful; it's just that we've seen and heard it all
before. It's been done to death over the last 25 years. Even that is
survivable if the songwriting is best of breed or there's some enticing new
twist on an old theme, but there isn't. Musically, lyrically and visually,
it's a conveyor belt of threadbare, mothballed electro-goth clichés.
At 45 minutes, it's a long support set. The Chameleons have been generous, but
it's been a long day for me already and I'm relieved when Sophya finally make
their exit.
The recording is excellent, if anything better than the one I make later in
the evening of The Chameleons.
