Performance:
To say that I had a great deal of anticipation and angst leading up to this show would be an understatement. After suffering a heart attack in September, Peter's health and well being was of greatest concern. I had seen Peter's performance at the Yost Theatre in February and to say he looked unwell would be putting it mildly. He propped himself up using the mic stand as a cane throughout the very brief set. So when he came on stage donning a cane in hand I thought "uh-oh, here we go again!" However, the cane was merely a theater prop, quickly discarded after the incindiary opening of John Cale's classic "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores". Most importantly, Peter looked and sounded
great! Sure, there's a few rough spots in his vocal delivery (the opening cry of "Ziggy"). Still the performance of the entire band is one for the books. It's amazing that after a 13 year absense, these four men can step onto a stage and play like they had just played yesterday. Daniel's angular guitar riffs were neatly interwoven into the Haskins' thunderous yet spartan rhythm section. To be fair two halves of the bend have been performing separately for the better part of two years. The highlights are too many to list.
Recording:
In spite of my efforts to secure a spot at the rail facing the left stack, I was relegated one person back. As such, I had one girl 5 feet to my right that woo-hoo'd throughout the enire show. Every effort has been made to mitigate the worst parts without effecting the music. You can still here her, but the worst parts have been muted. Also. Peter would come to the wings and sing at times. This would cause a fair amount of feedback (most notable during "Kick in the Eye") as his microphone was positioned in front of the speakers at the rear of the stage. Once again, I have mitigated the worst parts, so you don't feel like you have to rip your earbuds out during those passages. Also, Peter sings and plays melodica into a dead mic during the first two verses of "She's in Parties". They did go into a bit of "Here's the Dub" at the end of the song. Also, I boosted "The Three Shadows Part II" by +4dB.
Of Note:
The band debuted their cover of Iggy Pop's "Sister Midnight". Just awesome! Also, "The passion of Lovers" appeared on the set list, bud sadly was not played.
Highlights:
The entire show!
Please support the band by going to see them perform live and purchasing some merch like Kevin's book. You'll feel better for oing so.
