NOTES:
The new 'Tales Of Us' isn't my favourite Goldfrapp by a long chalk. It's a
rather sedate offering after 2010's raunchy 'Head First', but ultimately I
don't mind.
I commend Alison Goldfrapp (and any other artist) for challenging her fans by
reinventing her sound yet again (some might say rediscovering her older sound)
with this album. It may yet grow on me, of course, but in general, I feel
Alison is at her best when she's concocting her own unique cocktail of disco
and glam-rock.
This naturally means that I am in for a mixed evening, listening through the
new material and hoping it will ignite something within me, whilst -- let's be
honest -- counting the minutes until the older material is pulled out of the
hat. And so it goes. In fact, much of the chosen older repertoire this evening
also consists of slower songs.
'Thea' notably makes its maiden voyage tonight in the Paradiso, but the
proceedings don't start to build up a head of steam until 'Ride A White
Horse', by which time we're almost at the end of the main set. 'Ooh La La'
takes us into the encore break in the old familiar way.
Returning for a four song encore, the band end with the double jam of 'Train'
and -- what else but? -- 'Strict Machine'. Sadly for me, no 'Rocket' is
launched this evening.
I didn't have time to get this to you before the autumn holiday, but I can
assure you that the quality of the recording has made it worth the wait. This
is about as good as an audience recording of the band can sound.
As always, samples are included in the comments to assist you in deciding
whether or not to download this.
