Total running time     [2:12:27]

FLAC 16-bit         449 MB

Tape story:
The venue is a big club in Bologna. I located myself at about 10 m from the stage.
This is a mono recording because I had massive problems with the connection between the 9V battery and the battery box (left channel unusable).
Nevertheless the sound is crisp and clear (and with a very professional screamer during the first half of JD set).

What about the show?
It was my fifth Peter Hook and The Light show in about three years (Movement/PCL set in Roncade 2014 and Unknown Pleasures/Closer sets in Lisbon 2014, Florence 2015 and Soliera 2016, all taped).
NO set was significantly shortened compared to the other Substance shows (only 2 B-sides at the beginning and no Shellshock nor State Of The Nation).
Dave Clough on keyboards.

Technical notes:
- As mentioned above this is a mono recording: right channel has been used in place of the unusable left one with a slight equalisation because the original recording was a little bit boomy.
- The total running time of the recording was 2:31:47; I have cut the first 9:17 mins of intro recorded music from PA and the last useless 24 secs reducing the master firstly to 2:22:06.
- Then I have divided the recording in two separate parts, "New Order" set (1:12:16) and "Joy Division" set (1:00:11), deleting 9:39 mins of recorded music from PA between the two main sets.
- "New Order" set: I have amplified the recording (+3.5 dB) and faded-out the last 6 secs.
- "Joy Division" set: I have amplified the recording (+3.0 dB), faded-in the first 8 secs and faded-out the last 7 secs.
- If you burn to audio CD, you will need 2 CDs (CD1: 01-13; CD2: 14-28)

Please do not sell nor convert to mp3 for distribution (mp3 only for personal use!)
Feel free to share in the way you prefer, but please share this fileset as originally torrented (so preserve file integrity!)

RE-UPLOAD: Peter Hook's The Light performing Unknown Pleasures - The Music Box, Los Angeles - 11.12.2010 (Flac)

The last date of the american tour of Peter Hook' The Light, setlist consist of Unknown Pleasures plus the JD singles. Very good sound. Thank to the taper for sharing his recording.

Original Info file:

Enthusiastic crowd with a good mix of youngsters and oldsters.
Fantastic recording that clearly reveals when Hooky passed off lead bass duties with a nod to son Jack as I was positioned in front of Hook's bass cabinet whereas Jack's bass was elsewhere and not as pronounced from my vantage point.

Highlight for this taper was version of I Remember Nothing which had an inspired feel of madness compared to other 2010 performances. Perry Farrell danced around like a little kid and thoroughly enjoyed himself while singing Transmission.

For a moment during Ceremony I thought the Hookmeister was gonna have a heart attack as he backed off, grabbed his chest and had to have a swallow of something. But alas, he recovered and we'll no doubt see Closer tour next year. Enjoy it for what it was.

Tape story:
This is my first recording "abroad" (I mean, out of Italy).
The venue is a small club at Lisbon port area.
I arrived early so I could check the spot with the better sound, about 10 m from the stage.
People completely into the show with acceptable clapping and someone at my left singing (very good!) the first Closer tracks.
Another very good recording but again (as in Roncade) several small dropouts appeared.
I am sorry for this because in the meanwhile I have taped Depeche Mode, Editors and Franz Ferdinand without problems... seems Peter Hook has a "special" effect on my equipment.
Since I have found the mic's cable severely twisted, maybe my occasional movement (I was taping, but I was also into the show) were "registered" as excessive tension by the cable plugin... just an hypotesis.
Anyway the problem is limited to only four tracks (5, 13, 16 and 18) and the quality of the recording has been substantially preserved.

What about the show?
It was my second Peter Hook And The Light show in two months (the first one was the Movement/PCL set in Roncade, taped too).
I flew to Lisbon just in the afternoon and I enjoyed a 2-day holiday in this fine and friendly town.
I have decided to give me a chance to attend to the Unknown Pleasures/Closer set because I missed it in Italy two years ago and I feared this was one of the last chance to catch it... at a reasonable distance.
As a matter of fact I have really appreciated the previous show and my positive feeling was confirmed by this one.
Another quality show, with one of the longest setlist ever (32 live tracks).
Peter Hook And The Light has won the challenge with its genuine passion (more than a tribute band) and offers 2 hours and half shows at an unusual low price (less than 20 euros in Roncade and 25 euros in Lisbon).
I have never thought to listen Decades played live by one of the original JD members (that songs really moved me and is worth the money spent for the flight and the hotel).
And it is my great pleasure to share this recording with you.

Technical notes:
- The total running time of the recording was 2:56:32; I have cut the first 4:44 mins of intro recorded music from PA and the last useless 6 secs reducing the master firstly to 2:51:42.
- Secondly, I have amplified both channels (+9.0 dB)
- Thirdly, I have divided the recording in three separate parts, "New Order" set (0:39:08), "Closer" set (0:43:51) and "Unknown Pleasures + Encore" set (1:10:02), deleting about 15:15 and 3:25 mins of recorded music from PA between the three sets.
- "New Order" set: I have faded-out the last 10 secs.
- "Closer" set: I have faded-in the first 5 secs and faded-out the last 10 secs.
- "Unknown Pleasures + Encore" set: I have faded-in the first 5 secs and faded-out the last 10 secs.
- If you burn to audio CD, you will need 2 CDs, but I suggest 3 CDs (CD1: 01-08; CD3: 09-17; CD2: 18-34)

Please do not sell nor convert to mp3 for distribution (mp3 only for personal use!)

As requested, very good audience recording. Thanks to the original uploader.

Original Info File:

Very exciting to see Hooky for the first time since Wembley Arena in '06 (I might reseed that later) ...and what a great show!  Sadly no New Order support set ('though there was time for it - jetlag?), but The Light's interpretation of Joy Division's material was excellent, with, for me, Shadowplay as the night's standout.

NOTES:

This was my second time seeing Peter Hook and his band (the first time, back in Dec. 2010, they weren't know as "The Light" yet), and I was ecstatic about it.  Being a huge JD/New Order fan, and knowing that New Order themselves don't play the deep cuts at their shows, I couldn't wait to hear Peter Hook and the band bust out some New Order greats, even if it isn't technically the real band or whatever.  The opening Joy Division set was okay but it was lacking some "Digital" and "Disorder" in my opinion ("Dead Souls" would have been great too of course), therefore the highlight of the night was defintely the two New Order albums back to back.  And as much as I love Bernard and New Order, I have to say Peter's versions of "The Pefect Kiss" and "Bizzare Love Triangle" are 100x better.  It was a little odd they didn't end the encore with "Love Will Tear Us Apart", but what can ya do?  I was a little worried about how this recording would turn out, given I had never even been to this venue before (let alone a showin San Diego period) and I had to sorta hide my mics with a hoodie on (must have been the only person inside wearing a zipped up hoodie) but I actually think it turned out great!  So happy I had decided to bring out the recording gear for this (I almost didn't).  I went with two friends, and they knew I was recording, but they still tend to lean over and whisper/talk near me every once in a while, but it doesn't happen that often.  Enjoy, and I hope Peter Hook and the Light make it out to the desert in April...

Notes: A really fun, marathon show.  It was a drunk Saturday night crowd and in my experience, crowds consisting of people my age and older are usually the worst behaved.  With that said, I’m mostly happy with the recording, but there are a few songs during the 2nd half of the Low-Life set where you can hear drunken idiots off and on.

I arrived just in time for the opening Joy Division set but as the lights went
down I was still getting my equipment ready and with very little light put the mic
into the wrong input.  Anyway I realised that something was a miss as the recording
levels were low so after a few seconds sorting the problem out I manged to get the
mic into the right input hence Atmosphere is quieter up till about the 1:50 mark.

Again with the New Order set I was nearly caught out as there wasn't much time
between the two sets and having gone to the toilet and bar I got back just in time but
had to fade the first track in. Anyway it's still a decent recording and was a very
enjoyable gig for me especially with Lowlife and Brotherhood being my 2 favourite New Order
releases. This was my third time watching Hooky and the second time he's had someone in
the audience ejected which is why The Perfect Kiss was aborted the first time.
Anyway, here it is nearly 3 hours of music for you to enjoy.

NOTES:

My legs are protesting at having already had to hold the rest of me upright
for 3+ hours by the time Peter Hook and The Light take to the stage of The Max
at 22:45 to headline the second edition of Grauzone.

I've skipped the band's tours thus far. The idea of watching an ex-member of
Joy Division playing in his own tribute band seemed a bit sad to me and
therefore unappealing, on a par with the idea of seeing a New Order without
Hooky tread the boards again to pay off their mortgages.

I've slowly mellowed to the idea, though; perhaps made curious by the fact
that Hooky's odyssey through his back-catalogue now sees him arrive at his
former band's first work in their post-Curtis incarnation as New Order.

There are now effectively two bands out there on the live circuit, playing New
Order repertoire. One is still using the name and boasts more original members
of the band, but is Hooky's right to play the songs thereby in any way
diminished? I don't believe so.

Although there's been a lot of mud-slinging on both sides, I'm sympathetic to
Hooky's plight. He seems to have been left holding the shittier end of the
stick, as it were. He also has that much more to prove, singing songs that
were never (meant to be) sung by him and without the luxury of being able to
wield the brand name for its pulling power.

We're treated to a seven song, 25 minute Joy Division set as an appetiser,
after which the band leave the stage without announcement. Where have they
gone? And why? How long will they be gone?

The lights stay off and the band return within five minutes. Rather than
include several minutes of pointless audience rhubarb or fade one set out and
the next back in, I have chosen to crossfade from one to the next for a
seamless listening experience.

The next set starts with 'Procession' as a prelude to New Order's first album,
'Movement'. The song appears to be launched by the bass and it's not until I'm
mastering the gig afterwards that I notice that its synth intro is, in fact,
present, but so quiet that it's barely audible. It must have been coming
through only the stage monitor, but I didn't even notice it at the time.

The band are impressively tight, the proverbial well-oiled machine. Bass
duties are mostly handled by Jack Bates, Hooky's son, although Hooky also
plays bass, but mostly when he's not otherwise occupied with singing.

Apart from Hooky's voice, it's uncanny how faithfully the band are able to
reproduce the Joy Division and early New Order songs. I'm very impressed. In
fact, Hooky's voice is actually a lot closer to the baritone of Ian Curtis
than Bernard Sumner's, so he's significantly more convincing on those songs.

'Denial' ends the album and thus also the second set. The band disappear once
again for a piss/fag/pint, the lights remain off a second time and the shadowy
figures are once again back within five minutes.

The third set starts with another non-album preface, the eternally confusing
'Cries And Whispers', which many a fan will take to their grave believing to
be 'Mesh'.¹ Always one of my favourite early New Order songs, it sounds
frankly awesome in here tonight.

Following that song's A-side, 'Everything's Gone Green', the band take the lid
off New Order's second album, 'Power, Corruption & Lies'. Although a much
poppier album, the stylistic change is convincingly negotiated by the band.
It's finally possible to dance, and many now seize the opportunity.

The end of the album leads us into the encore break and signals my opportunity
to change batteries. I've been recording the band for two hours now, and with
no idea how long the encore will run, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Again, a crossfade at this point ensures that the listening experience remains
seamless.

The evening finishes on a trio of singles, 'Ceremony', 'Temptation' and 'Blue
Monday'. Hooky looks as if he wants to go on, but someone has called time on
him and he says his goodbye.

It's 01:15. The band played for a good two hours and fifteen minutes, and
that's after subtracting the time spent off-stage between sets. I think it's
fair to say that the band played an absolute blinder tonight.

I bike home in the rain at approximately 1 km/h, my knees having all but
completely seized up after standing for almost six hours, glued to the same
spot. Was it worth it? You bet. Wait until you hear the recording.

I'm beyond chuffed at how well the recording has turned out. It has surpassed
my already high expectations and sounds, let's be frank, bloody brilliant. I
consider this essential listening.

The Band / Performance:

On the surface, it does seem rather strange that Peter Hook would choose to perform New Order's seminal debut "Movement" and iconic follow-up "Power Corruption And Lies" while the namesake band is still around to perform said songs themselves. If you dig a bit deeper you will find that there is no love lost between Peter and his former bandmates. After two very successful tours performing Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer", Hooky returns to The States two years later to perform the
N.O. classics. Thanks to Ryan J for the tip on openers "Slaves Of Venus" actually being comprised of Peter Hook And The Light, themselves. S.O.V. was a nascent band name considered during the J.D. -> N.O. transition. A fact that seemed to be buried in my subconscious. Not to be caught off guard, I performed a battery swap after the opening set. Still, I wasn't quite prepared for Hooky & Co. to play for another 2 hours 15 minutes. The material was aptly performed by the men, who seem to get better on each go around. David Potts from Revenge/Monaco deftly handles the guitar duties here while Hooky's son Jack proves to be an excellent bass player in his own right. Peter's vocals are still somewhere in the middle of the mix and he does seem to play bass less frequently. No Moby or Perry this time around in L.A. to assist with the vocal duties. The band exited the stage after "Leave Me Alone" and returned for "Everything's Gone Green". They let the machines run for "The Beach", the dub classic of  "Blue Monday". The band decided not to return after closing with "Blue Monday". No "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on this night.

The Recording:

A pretty solid pull from the same relative position as my other two recordings posted here in '10 and '11. I believe my U.P. recording is still kicking around the tracker (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=335602) if someone cares to seed it. "Closer" has long since fallen off so some kind hearted soul would have to reseed that one. My original torrents are archived on some external drive sitting on a shelf somewhere. There is some clapping and hollering but nothing that blows out my mics. Most were content to stand quietly transfixed, especially during the aptly titled "We All Stand". Overall, I'm pretty happy with the
recording and very happy that I was able to get the whole thing. I decided to include the opening set from S.O.V. as it was the same band. There's some serious dynamic range on "5 8 6" (about +20 dB). So crank that one up.

Of Note:

FAC 93: "Confusion", FAC 103: "Thieves Like Us" and FBN 22: "Murder" were not performed. It may seem like heresy to some, but I would have rather heard these dancehall classics over the Joy Division stuff this time around. I suppose I will have to wait and see if Peter will return to play "Low Life" at some point in time.

A must for fans of: Joy Division, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, The Cure, Moby, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, etc...
