Manorexia (JG Thirwell) - Kampnagel KMH, Hamburg, Germany - 27.04.2013 (Flac)

Excellent audience recording, Thanks to the taper for sharing his recording on DIME.

Original Info File:

Church Audio CA 14 Cardioids > Sony RH1 (PCM-mode) > Hi-MD > Sonic Stage > wav > Audacity (level adjustments, trackmarking, a little leveller for close clapping) > TLH > flac level 8

recorded 8 meters from stage, slightly to the right

J.G. Thirlwell - composition, sampler, keyboard
Tim Parkinson - piano, keyboard
Angharad Davies - violin
Rachel Steadman - violin
Nozomi Cohen - viola
Jessica Cox - cello
Adam Morris - drums, percussion, xylophone

JG Thirwell (a.k.a. Foetus, Steroid Maximus and other incarnations) is one of the most taciturn musicians I've ever seen on stage. Not a word. Not during the performance (a modern string quartett augmented by xylophone, piano, percussion, drums and various samples, Thirwell's active contribution on stage), not afterwards, just a couple of stage bows.

The small Kampnagel KMH venue was nicely filled but not too much, the audience quiet, creating very good recording conditions, very litte audience chatter, a few bottle noises from the bar.

Recording levels were fine except for some of the loud drum parts (tr 04 min 7, 11 and 12 - 14) when I had exceeding levels on the right channel, but only by the drums and high hat, so it didn't really result in any distortion and rather then replace it by the left channel I left it as it is. Lowered the recording levels slightly afterwards, and corrected that (+ 1,5 dB tr 05 onwards).

I cannot offer a setlist, maybe somebody who owns the records can help.

"Be-In" USA 1967.
Director and writer: Jerry Abrams; music: Blue Cheer (unreleased track)
Captures the spirit and essence of the great San Francisco Human Be-In of January 14, 1967.
Ten thousand people imbued with peace, love and euphoria. Set to hard rock such as only San Francisco blues can produce. "Be-In" features footage of Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Timothy Leary, Michael McClure, Lenore Kandel and The Grateful Dead.

"Beatles Electronique" USA 1966-69.
Directors and writers: Nam June Paik, Jud Yalkut; music: Kenneth Lerner (unreleased)
"Beatles Electronique" is a mesmerizing improvisation that reveals Paik's early engagement with the manipulation of pop cultural material. Against a looped electronic soundtrack, images of the Beatles from "A Hard Day's Night" and performing at Shea Stadium are transformed into an eerily hypnotic study.

"San Francisco" Great Britain 1967/68.
Director and writer: Anthony Stern; music: Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive (unreleased version, recorded at Thompson Private Recording Studios on 31 October 1966 (or there about))
Anthony Stern's "San Francisco" could be described as a city film and allied with Jean Vigo's "A Propos de Nice" (France, 1930) and Walther Ruttman's "Berlin: die Sinfonie der Gro?stadt" (Berlin: Symphony of a City, Germany, 1927). (...) The music that accompanies the film is occasionally synched to various San Franciscan musicians - march bands, street musicians, bands on stage - it was, however, recorded in London (...) and was played by The Pink Floyd. The track, 'Interstellar Overdrive', at first drives the film, the flickering and flashing images matching the music's propulsive beat. Later, as the music calms, our attention is led more explicitly to the images. Now the rapid cutting decreases and the film concentrates on a house and the ritualistic occult activity contained therein. (...) These changes in music and image create a focus point and then, as the music returns triumphantly to its original pattern, a grand finale. The use of 'Interstellar Overdrive' came about through an intermix of relations between Stern, The Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett, and filmmaker Peter Whitehead. All three had lived in Cambridge and all three had had painting exhibitions in the same upper room of the Lion and Lamb pub in the village of Milton. Stern later worked on several Whitehead films, including "Tonite Lets All Make Love in London" (1967) and, through his friendship with Barrett, succeeded in bringing the three together again in London. This lead to the use of 'Interstellar Overdrive' in both "Tonite" and then in "San Francisco". William Fowler

"Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable" USA/Great Britain 1967.
Director and writer: Ronald Nameth; music: The Velvet Underground (unreleased live versions)
"The Exploding Plastic Inevitable", sometimes simply called Plastic Inevitable or EPI, was a series of multimedia events organized by Andy Warhol between 1966 and 1967, featuring musical performances by The Velvet Underground & Nico, screenings of Warhol's films, and dancing and performances
by regulars of Warhol's Factory, especially Mary Woronov and Gerard Malanga. "Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable" is also the title of an 18 minute film by Ronald Nameth with recordings from one week of performances of the shows which were filmed in Chicago in 1966. "The Exploding Plastic Inevitable" had its roots in an event staged on January 13, 1966 at a dinner for the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry. This event, called "Up-Tight", included performances by The Velvet Underground and Nico, along with Malanga and Edie Sedgwick as dancers. Inaugural shows were held the Dom in New York City in April 1966, advertised in The Village Voice as follows: "The Silver Dream Factory Presents The Exploding Plastic Inevitable with Andy Warhol/The Velvet Underground/and Nico."

"Eyetoon" USA 1967/68, 8 min.
Director and writer: Jerry Abrams; music: David Litwin, Different Fur Trading Co (unreleased)
"The sea, tranquil and violent, is the ultimate symbol for Jerry Abrams' 'EYETOON' and the ultimate equivalent to making love - his concern in this short  and visually dazzling film. Abrams contrasts the rushing faces of New York and a highway juggernaut with the peaceful joining of bodies in a Gjon Mili-like  stroboscopic sequence - always with a burbling, flashing maelstrom of emotions underlying and double-exposing with the bodies. It is visually lovely,  technically first-rate and impossible to ignore. The graphic sex is economically handled." - John L. Wasserman, San Francisco Chronicle
"The film 'EYETOON' would seem to be the perfect synthesis of the metaphysical, spiritual and sexual feelings of a sensitive experimental filmmaker." - Reverend Earl Shagley

Rob Sheridan - Keys

Notes
1] I'm not an enormous Reznor fan, but another taper I know is, and got me interested in going out to
tape his projects, primarily NIN, but that will have to wait for a little while longer. I wasn't
very impressed with the studio material, although it certainly isn't bad, but I found it far more
enjoyable in a live setting, but still not quite my thing. Of some note, is that this was one of
three shows to sell out, and I believe the only one to have sold out during the general pre-sale.
The other two were/are the show in San Francisco, and the show next week in New York. Plenty of
tickets were available on StubHub for this show, though, and I don't know many people were inside
as compared to the amount of tickets sold, but, both the balcony and floor were packed.

2] I'm always pleased when I find myself at the Vic because it's a rather nice venue. Though it may
be lightly dilapidated on the inside, the sightlines are very good in the balcony, the seats are
still comfortable enough, and the sound is excellent and what I consider to the be the highlight
of going to the Vic Theatre. Thus far, the Vic is the venue I've pulled at the most in my taping
ventures and I've always left with something rather nice to listen to, this being no exception.

3] Aside from the Vic's excellent sound, the crowd was mostly respectable. As was noted in another
HTDA torrent, everyone here was very chatty, but largely during the opener (which wasn't DIIV for
us, unfortunately, as they had been trapped in a snow storm) and not during HtDA. The people directly
in front of me weren't talkers by any means and didn't clap as far as I noticed, and though I had
a ham-slapper to my right, she isn't as prominent as I had feared. Lots of hoots and hollers
during HtDA, particularly when either Trent or Mariqueen did anything remotely interesting, and
one right behind me at some point, but nothing terrible.

The artist / performance...

Best known (or perhaps not) as the imposing frontman with the Italian suits and Aviator sunglasses of EBM Dance Industrial outfit Nitzer Ebb, Douglas J's contribution to the world of electronic dance music has been greatly overlooked over the years. Still, songs like "Murderous" (prominently featured in an episode of "The Following" last week) have crept into the fabric of mainstream culture. I'm not quite sure that you'll be hearing the Teutonic verses of "Control, I'm Here" or "Join In The Chant" in the next Toyota commercial. Still the music has an enduring and endearing quality that seems to maintain its relevancy today. After a 30 year association with N.E.P., as a vocal collaborator with Terrence Fixmer and "gun for hire" for Recoil, Motor, et al, Mr. McCarthy has found his solo voice.
Last year he produced a stunning work of electronica and synth dance in the form of "Kill Your Friends" produced by fame Mode / Bjork producer Mark Bell. Unfortunately Pylon Records did a poor job in promoting the release.

Douglas' in-store performance and signing at Amoeba last year only attracted 25 or 30 fans. This hardly seems possible for someone of his note. The 2009-11 Nitzer Ebb reunion attracted very positive reviews and near capacity audiences around the world. They even enjoyed a 30+ date European opening slot with former label mates, Depeche Mode.
Last night's crowd of 150 or so was much better. After 2 1/2 years, Douglas makes his return to the L.A. hipster village of Silverlake this time upstairs at the echo. The audience (as perusual for this community) was pretty sedate with only a handful of dancers. Most were content to hangout around the bar area (12 ft to my left). There's not much in the form of audience chatter directly on mic on the recording as most were poltie enough and content to watch Doug's bold moves and grand jestures.

Those that were not can be heard as a murmur in the background. The set was comprised of material from the new album and N.E.P. classic "Join In The Chant". Some of the new tracks sound like they were ideas comprised during the recording of Industrial Complex. The pulsating driving beat of "Move On" reminds me a bit of "Promises" while "Love In The Backroom" is an obvious sequel to "Down On Your Knees". Perhaps that is where the similarities end. The production on this release has a more electronica feel rather than an industrial sound. The downtempo of "Death Is King" is among Doug's
best work to date IMHO. Also, the languid beats of Evil Love sound like something from Alan Wilder's songbook. If you are (or were) a fan of N.E.P. or DM, do yourself a favour and pick up DJM's latest.

You won't be disappointed. I guarantee it!

Please note: This guarantee does not apply to "Delta Machine". ;-).

The recording...

Pulled from the golden triangle from 2 pretty hot ceiling stacks. Omnis picked up a bit of wayward chatter at times. No whistlers or loud clappers (except for 20 seconds or so of "Join In The Chant"). That's just "not cool" (thankfully) for this kind of crowd. Vocals are clear and distinctive. This is Douglas Fucking McCarthy after all. Expect no less.

Note: a small amount of amplification was applied throughout the recording to balance the levels. No normalization was applied.

Please support the artist by buying his new album "Kill Your Friends" on both CD and LP (Vinyl). The Vinyl edition comes with a bonus CD of remixes. i-Pad users may want to impress, who else? their friends of course, with the heptagram infused "Kill Your Friends" leather folio. It's sure to attract (undue) attention at your office...

Note...

Now an Angelino resident, Doug could be seen @ Jimmy Kimmel Live on 04/24 to see his Basildon pals, Depeche Mode. Doug will be supporting Mode once again on select European dates during the Delta Machine Tour.

Oh and if you enjoy the stylings of...
