The performance:

The co-founder of EBM / Industrial act Nitzer Ebb performed in front of a paltry crowd of 30 or so at L.A.'s independent record store Amoeba. I expected a considerably higher turnout. I don't think that Douglas' representatives or label did very much to promote the in-store event. I overheard the rep say "Sorry I only brought 3 posters!" Pylon did a much better job promoting Peter Hook's in-store appearance last year. They really dropped the ball here. I only found out about it because I stumbled across Amoeba's website the week before. Coupled with the fact that, in spite of a very successful Ebb reunion and recent world tour, Doug's is hardly a household name even amongst fans. In spite of this, Mr. McCarthy put on a fantastic (albeit brief) set comprised of four new songs and Ebb classic "Join In The Chant". Doug's voice is as strong as ever and his stage presence is something to be witnessed. The diminuitive size of the stage did make him appear like a caged panther trying to free himself. Doug was flanked by an uncredited keyboardist and an analogue console operator.

The recording...

An excellent pull (IMHO) 5' directly from the left ceiling stack. The sound was very solid with a fair amount of bass and punch. There is a very minimal amount of chatter in the distant background. The remote "clickity-click-click" sound at the beginning of "Taken" is actually some guy browsing the Christmas CD's directly to my left. If you listen carefully you can here it. Too funny! A moderate amount of gain was applied in Audition. No normilization was done.
The 24b master ensured that not much post noise or hiss was introduced. Vocal and instruments are clear and dynamic. Some light EQ was applied in HarBal.

Of note...

Doug signed his solo debut "Kill Your Friends" to the two dozen that stuck around afterward. He took the time to chat up the fans in line. He event went so far as to sign one guy's entire collection of the entire N.E.P. catalog of about 30 or so CD's. "KYF" was produced in part or whole by longtime Bjork collaborator and LFO founder Mark Bell who also as it happens produced DM's "Exciter".

Oh and if you enjoy Douglas McCarthy's previous contributions to and collaborations with...

Nitzer Ebb, Fixmer/McCarthy, Recoil, Motor and as an opener to Depeche Mode's "World Violation" and "Tour of the Universe" tours you should most certainly enjoy his solo debut.

Please support the artist by buying his new album "Kill Your Friends" on Pylon Records out now!
or by attending one of his shows...
