The Cult - The Varsity Theater, Minneapolis, MN, USA - 06.08.2013 (Flac)

Thanks to  Hurricane62 for sharing his recording on Dime.

Original Info File:

"Electric 13 In Dinkytown"

Recorded by Hurricane62 from near-dead-center, not far from the front of the stage.

Audio Technica SP-CMC-2 Cardioid Mics -> SP-SPSB-11 Battery Box with Bass Rolloff set at 95 hZ -> Sony PCM-M10 (44.1 MHz/16 bit) with Limiter ON and Low Pass Filter OFF -> WavePad (amp & track splitting) -> converted to .flac using Traders Little Helper (SBE's fixed, flac level 8)

Great show in front of a sold-out venue.  This was my first time at The Varsity Theater and I was very pleased with the layout and the acoustics.  Recording came out very good.  Minor eq work done to highlight and balance the vocals and guitars.  I also went through and one-by-one de-amplified the individual claps of a very loud clapper that moved to my front-left just before The Cult began.

There was a noticable shift in the sound in the second set.  My record levels were unchanged during the intermission, but when they came out and started into "Rain" I had to chase the levels for some reason.  Through the first half of the second set Ian Astbury was fighting feedback in his in-ear monitor and was working the soundman pretty hard trying to get it fixed.  The vocals go forward and back for a while (especially for "Embers", "The Phoenix", "Rise", and "For The Animals") until eventually they bring Ian a new microphone (you can hear him throwing the first one down - TWICE) just before "She Sells Sanctuary".  As a result, the sound on the second set is not as good as it is on the first set.

There is also an intermittent hiss/pop/crackle in the right channel.  I must've had a nearly-loose connection.  Between the jostling in the tightly packed crowd and me chasing levels in the second set, the static shows up and disappears throughout, but is never terrible and is always short-lived other than at the start of "Lucifer".

ARTWORK IS INCLUDED.

There is a video of "Sweet Soul Sister" that I shot and synced to this audio source here:  http://youtu.be/GX85EvyGcAg

Enjoy!

  1. i don't reshare--i refer people to where i got something if they're interested--but i think it's kind ov shitty that you guys have such a bug up your ass about conversion to mp3. noöne can tell the difference between FLAC and 320kbps mp3 under normal listening conditions. IT DOESN'T MATTER.

    1. This is not the place to discuss lossy vs lossless format.

We share the recordings on the format that we got them, and respect the wishes of the taper or person who shared it first.

After downloading the lossless version, one is free to convert it to the format that suits him/her best.
