First concert of the Year for Editors Tom mentioned it. This was maybe a good chance for Editors to play a rehearsal show before the tour starts (next friday the 13th in Barcelona). Indeed during part of the set it was obvious that they were getting the hang of it again (Tom fucked up during Formaldehyde) but nothing fell short of good. Well maybe the audience :-) the show was part of the student’s fest in Coimbra a city with a large academy and as you can imagine most of the audience was no more than drunk... There was not a large crowd when they started to play but in the end it was packed. It was not an easy show to tape because everybody enjoys a microphone when they see one and if they are drunk it is like they are attracted by the force... :-) still and finally i was able to record an Editors show (tried and failed 3 times) but it is not perfect. Even if i enjoy the final result it is noticeable the bass is a bit over the edge. I tried to work on it a bit but not much improvement was possible. But besides that everything is clear and well balanced. Of course there is a bit of crowd noise but nothing that will distract you. There is a drop out for seconds during Sugar but it was due to PA failure. The band kept playing because the stage sound was working.
A new song was played at this show The Pulse is a good song with a different twist to it i enjoyed it a lot.
Enjoy and share
Cheers

Gyda Valtysdottir - Coliseu, Lisboa, Portugal - 13.07.2016 (Flac)

Very interesting ethereal music from one of the lead singers of the extinct iceland band Múm. I didn't knew her before but was greatly impressed, she plays guitar and cello alone on stage and is able to create some breathtaking moments. The small set is due to the fact that she was supporting Damien Rice, so was only allowed an 30 minutes set.

Lineage: Roland R-05 with Internal Mics -> Audacity -> TLH -> Flac (level 6)

Lycia - Wake (Free Download/Pay What You Want)

This is a great album, get it while you can.

Wake is often referred to as Lycia's first official release. A better description would be a local slightly distributed demo. In early 1989 Mike VanPortfleet and John Fair approached Orphanage Records, a local Phoenix based label specializing in dark and experimental styles, with a few recently recorded Lycia demo songs. Orphanage agreed to put something out and even suggested putting out the demo songs themselves. Lycia decided instead to re-record and approach it as an official release. The initial plan was to re-record some of the earlier written stronger songs. The idea of actually recording an albums' worth of material was even toyed with. But during the recording process issues arose. In retrospect these issues should have been easy to identify, but with only a few months of home recording experience these issues derailed the sessions. Moving ahead in the way they worked best, four new songs were recorded instead (Nothing, Wake, The Bells and Down There). From Foam was reworked and an old unfinished song (This Decline) was recorded. In March of 1989 Orphanage released Wake on cassette. 50 copies were hand duplicated by Lycia, half going to Orphanage for local distribution and the other half kept by the band (a good portion of which were recorded over in the coming years). Wake went unnoticed until re-released on CD by Projekt in 1993. This version was restored by Sam Rosenthal and also included three additional quick mix outtakes from the original Wake sessions (Sing Like Sirens, Incinerate and Time). In the late 1990s Wake went out of print.

On numerous occasions in the 2000s the idea of a re-mastered/restored Wake was considered and even attempted. But the end results never were satisfying and the idea was abandoned. The restored Projekt version used a source cassette that was in rough condition, with numerous glitches and warbles. Sam did a wonderful job with a sub par source cassette, but by 1993 that is all that remained.

In the spring of 2016 Mike VanPortfleet received of box of his Mother's belongings. She passed away in 1997. A saved box of Lycia related items, including an original Wake cassette, sat in storage for years. This long lost copy of Wake was in near perfect condition and appeared to have never been played. It was quickly digitized and the numerous technical issues that plagued the earlier released CD version were not present. A professional re-master was considered but the decision was made instead to re-release 'as is'. So what you hear here is the original Wake cassette as released by Orphanage.

For this reissue Lycia decided to go with the Projekt cover, which was hand painted by Susan Jennings especially for Wake. A given since it is the best Lycia album image ever.

LYCIA~WAKE

NOTHING

FROM FOAM
DOWN*

Mike VanPortfleet: guitars, vocals
John Fair: bass, rhythm programs
Will Welch: effects**

*The name Down was also used for another song that appeared on the Projekt compilation CD From Across This Gray Land No. 2 in 1990. At that point Wake was still seen as a demo so the duplicate use of the name was not seen as an issue. For that reason the original Wake song Down was renamed Down There on the 1993 Projekt reissue.

**Will Welch was an on again off again member of Lycia at various times from 1988 to 1993. He was not directly involved in the writing or performance of Wake. He assisted with the final mix and loaned equipment, including a rack-mount Roland effects units that was used on every song.

***The Cave was name given to Mike VanPortfleet’s small studio apartment in Tempe Arizona by a since forgotten person who was put off by the dimly lit cigarette smoke filled small space.

Daniel Miller - 60 Minute Mix Previewing Festival Forte (Free Download)

Ahead of his performance at this year's Festival Forte, in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, Daniel Miller—the UK DJ-producer and founder of Mute Records—has put together a 60-minute mix.

Although he began DJing many years ago, it was until he was invited by Karl O’Connor (a.k.a Regis) to play a Sandwell District event at Berlin’s Berghain that he really caught the bug. Since then, he has been playing regular techno sets worldwide, including at Barcelona's Sónar Festival, Amsterdam's ADE and Lyon's Nuits Sonores.

The mix is available to download via the WeTransfer button on the site link  below.

This is a partial recording of the first concert by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in Portugal. I was not there but those who were talk about a packed house and a wild wild night.
Pitty the concert is not complete it misses 6 songs but what we get is quite nice. The sound is a bit muffled but still quite listenable.
I am not sure if this circulated much i traded long long ago maybe at the beggining of 1989. My tape is old but still stands :-)no clue on tape generation or equipment used.
Enjoy and share.

RE-UPLOAD: The Kills - Optimus Alive Festival, Algés, Portugal - 15.07.2012 (Flac)

Photo: Nuno Fontinha

Another concert from the Optimus Alive 2012, and this one was surely the highlight of the day. Only the Kills to keep the attention level up at the late hours that the concert was scheduled. Huge thanks to ziggyswoon for sharing his recording. Excellent sound.

Original Info File:

10 minutes to 2 o'clock in the morning The Kills ignited the stage for one hour. What a show!! They were afraid playing at that hour but the tent was packed and ready for them.

It was a perfect moment of comunion between band and audience. During Last Goodbye the song kicks off to soon be stoped by Alison because she spoted a a guy in front row knocked out. They stoped until it was said that everything was ok and he had been taken to medical care. Then she dedicated the song to him and the gig went on.

The band was on fire alongside with the crowd. Without a doubt one of the best live shows i have seen in all my life. Loved it loved it loved it.
