The Kaleidoscope Tour proper kickstarts...

1980-09-13, Leeds, Queen's Hall (Futurama Festival)

Lynden Barber, Melody Maker 02/09/80 -- Meanwhile, most of the audience are more interested in positioning themselves in front of the left-hand stage, where billtopper Siouxsie and the Banshees are due to come on.

They’re not disappointed. Siouxsie’s performance is quite simply one of the most inspiring I’ve ever seen anyone give. She owns the stage, turning the traditional passive sex symbol role of the female singer on its head. She chastises the hordes of 18- to 21-year-old wide-eyed youths reaching their hands out towards her, telling them, "I didn’t say you could talk" like a schoolmistress. Siouxsie is sexual, but in a dominant way, smashing a tambourine against a mike stand and flailing her microphone lead like a whip. The Banshees seem to feed off the atmosphere of near hysteria as they run through powerful versions of most of the songs from "Kaleidoscope", and McGeoch and Budgie add new touches to older songs like "Switch", "Regal Zone" and "Jigsaw Feeling". It’s an overwhelming performance, and I almost panic at the threat of being crushed by people hanging precariously off the scaffolding around the stage....

Rolling on toward Frisco...

1980-11-16, New York, The Palladium

Richard Grabel, NME 1980 -- Siouxsie And The Banshees' opening - darkness and squealing feedback, lights revealing Siouxsie posing like Kabuki grotesquerie - is pretentious beyond excuse, and the 'Helter Skelter' it heralds more a butchering than an interpretation.  But 'Playground Twist', which follows, puts things back on track.  It's a spooky, sometimes uncomfortable ride, but well worth the price.

The Banshees' sound is abrasive and chilling, but centered on a beat as deep and natural as a heart pumping.  John McGeoch is a great guitarist.  His sound often reminds me of Keith Levine or Pat Place, yet his own individuality takes it beyond any comparison.

The set careens wildly between extremes of mood and sound, from soft, acoustic guitar fables like 'Christine' to raucous, screeching attacks of murky noise.  'Israel' is a standout, McGeoch getting a stunning, crystalline sound and Siouxsie's singing clear, almost pretty, yet assertive and disturbing.  'Red Light' is another, with Severin moving to synthesiser to create an ominous undercurrent, the song full of texture and exciting rhythm.

The visual contrast of the dark haired Siouxsie and her three dyed-blond men is contrived, but it is also stylish and effective, and much a relief after 999's stodgy orthodoxy.  The Banshees sometimes let the image, presence and atmosphere win out over ideas, feelings and content.  But they have the skill to succeed in creating just the right atmosphere - from horror-film menace to 'Happy House' exhilaration.  They are sometimes deliberately ugly, but that doesn't mean they deny beauty or its uses.

Siouxsie thumbs her nose at the audience a few times, in fun, but there's no suggestion of indifference in her attitude.  I would prefer less of her screeching and more of her singing (she has a good voice when she wants to use it), but there is logic to her choices.  She seems in touch with her audience and with herself.

They get two encores, not a proforma response and not merely fan adulation.  They played a long and varied set, and along the way lost some of the audience.  But their music has only a few handles to grab and in it, beauty and ugliness play an ironic push-pull game.  Those who stayed with it felt the rewards.

Q&A With Siouxsie Sioux

Jud Cost, magnetmagazine.com, 2007-10-06 -- ...Admittedly a bit “gaga” after a day full of radio interviews, Sioux spoke to MAGNET from London.

JC: I first saw Siouxsie & The Banshees play at the California Hall, I think in 1980. It was one of the hottest nights I’ve ever experienced in San Francisco, and they’d stuffed that place to the maximum. People were passing out.

SS: Yep, I remember how hot that was. That was our first time to play in the States, and we’d just played the Whisky in L.A. We had a very special guest who came to see us at the Whisky, and that was Bryan Gregory, the guitarist from the Cramps.

JC: Ah, yes, the man with the bone necklace.

SS: And the chiseled face and that great white streak in his hair. I remember I got to meet his pet snake. I seem to recall chasing someone around the dressing room, holding that snake. It was a big python...

- In big thanks to all for sharing and celebrating this grand damn banner year of the banshee on DIME, especially albi04, chrispoor, deucecoupe, dimitroy, DutchPunkOTR, erikdenning, metro_cubo, Nepenthes, noahwall, Spacebandit, survivor6, whiskybob, yates7592.

Cheers for all the dear Siouxsie!

- 1980-11-26 is a Wednesday, and in the US that means twas the night before the annual US holiday of Thanksgiving. So...

(Never Too Late For Early Dining Out On)
Happy Thanksgiving Eve White/Eve Black!

________________________________________________________________________________

2012-10-09 mikedreams on... SATB: Sly and throbby.

- Requests are made from the stage from SATB to have the monitors turned up, and for the crowd to stop throwing shit at them and fists at each other.

(Before Red Over White) Siouxsie: "If you want to fight, just beat your head on the floor."

'The beat is coming nearer . . .'

No bother, my Voodoo Darling is already here.

RE-UPLOAD: And Also The Trees - Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK - 30.04.1984 (Flac)

A very good sounding recording. Thanks to  TheMonk for sharing this one on DIME some time ago.

Original Info File:

Here's a classic AATT show from 1984. AATT played as support to The Cure on this occasion.

It's a soundboard recording of their appearance at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, England on 30 April 1984. This is a transfer from the original analogue master tape, so this is the ultimate version of this show. I think I've seeded this one before a few years ago, but maybe there are some newer members who missed this great show when it was on the tracker for the first time...

notes:
for nearly 25 years jack dangers has produced music that has been innovative, groundbreaking and genre defying. he effortlessly moves though industrial, ambient techno, idm, drum n bass, electronica, acid house, trip hop, world music, dubstep reggae and jazz fusion while building music collages. he is the progenitor of many of these styles. a man of many peers but perhaps with no equal. his material is both familiar to many but known by few. i have been a casual fan of his soundtrack and remix work for many years, yet unaware of his oeuvre. jack is renown for his intricate breakbeat patterns. his recent albums a.c.i.d. and autoimmune are anchored by gut-wrenching bass. i mean really, really, fucking LOW BASS!!! 12 Hz anyone?!!! I read on a fan forum that a guy was assaulted by the worst smelling flatulence at the seattle show. what? if there truly is a "brown note", then jack dangers has found it!

this recording:
holy cow! where do i start? this was definitely one of the most challenging shows i've ever had to tape in my 25 years of taping; mode black celebration in '86 was the first!. frequency response was SO fucking low, that the raw recording was a muddy mess of dirge and harmonic resonance. next time, i will employ a bb with roll-off. this reduces my stealth profile though and makes getting past the metal detectors at some l.a. venues much more difficult. needless to say, i felt that i had something completely unuseable and unsalvageable. disappointed to say the least. my brother (a huge fan since
"storm the studio days") bought us tix for the show for xmas. i didn't want to tell him that i had another peter murphy show on my hands (my curse: one descent pull out of 12+ shows. last show, i left the R09 in pause). fortunately my tiny slave sound omnis didn't brickwall, so i felt that i could perhaps strip away enough bass to make something listenable. the result?
a very listenable show with a wider than expected f/r but a rather compressed d/r of +6 - 7 dB (hence the vg-). i tend to shoot for +12 dB with my recordings. so this aud has a rather fm radio sound to it and isn't one of my best works. still, it's worth the d/l IMHO. for the doubters: there's still plenty of bass to melt your stock ipod earbuds. you've been warned!

of note:
opening act "not breathing" was comprised of four gentlemen playing d.i.y. modular analogue synths while kneeling on the stage. apparently audio engineer extraordinaire dave wright builds these noise makers himself. skinny puppy alum cEVIN Key was one of four prodding away at his roland jp8000. sadly, i did not record their performance. still worth checking out for lovers of early synth (kraftwerk, cabaret voltaire, the normal, numan, etc...)

gratuitous propaganda:
a must for fans of: aphex twin, bomb the bass, chemical brothers, fatboy slim, fsol, massive attack, nin, nitzer ebb, the orb, orbital, pwei, recoil, renegade soundwave, skinny puppy, tricky.

please buy jack's phenomenal new album "a.c.i.d. - answers come in dreams" or get to one of jack and ben's shows.

dedicated to my brother for the ticket, the good times and the cue sheet assistance.

shoutout to my friend elizabeth.

special mention to ultra-conservative d-bag bill o'reilly!

BS 6920 - DVBDream - TS Doctor

Recorded from an SD satellite feed (no logo). Not sure what tv coverage this gets across Europe so there
may be a better recording available at some point. The show was broadcast live except encore which was
shown later with an interview placed in the middle (which I have left as a seperate file). Cuts are a bit rough (no more than around 10 seconds either side) due to standard editing and demux programs throwing up different problems with major sync issues and doubling runtime despite no errors in TS Doctor. Files play fine in vlc.

RE-UPLOAD: Billy Idol - Cyberpunk; Shock To The System [1993/DVD-NTSC]

Billy Idol's late arrival to the Cyberpunk culture, in another relic from the VHS era. I remember not being a great fan of Billy's music, but liking this videoclip, wich is highly influenced by the Tetsuo films, wich I like a lot. Thanks to sartana for sharing this rip and to   S+©kmªÑ for the links.

Original Info File:

I purchased this back in 93 from the local Camelot Music..Remember them?

So,you get 3 music videos and a behind the scenes look at how they made the Shock to the System video.
"Blendo"has something to do with some kind of virtual reality doo hickey Billy seemed to enjoy playing with at the time.Really it just looks like some kinda' video effects that might have seemed cool at the time but now,....OK,they do go with his version of Heroin quite nicely

This was transerred to DVDR by my brother.I than took that DVDR and used TMPGEnc to create a menu and chapters.
