David Bowie - Earls Court Arena, London, UK - 01.07.1978 (Flac)

DAVID BOWIE - ISOLAR II IN THE COURT
(Helden 2013/DEN 16/17)

LINEAGE:
Original "Den" CDs -> WAV (EAC v. 0.99 beta 4 - secure, Offset "actual") -> FLAC (Traders Little Helper) -> You

DATE/VENUE:

Last show of the European Tour 1978

QUALITY:
CD1: Very Good - Excellent Soundboard (!)
CD2: Good audience

COMMENTS:
Now here comes a real sensation....a new November 2013 bootleg from Japan features the 1st half of the last European 1978 concert of David Bowie in soundboard quality. 1 song from this SBD source was previously released on "bootleg", but the rest was uncirculated outside of the "important collectors" circles. They didn't want money to be made on it, or something.... Well; if I had been getting to listen to this show for free (via torrents/trading) I obviously would not had been purchasing this Japanese bootleg now. And there are far worse things than the "bootlegers" around as far as ethic issue and "undeserved money" is concerned. Maybe one's "moral stands" could be used for something less navel-gazing than hoarding great recordings? Anyway, after 35 years of waiting, this London recording is available to the "common guy" for enjoyment. Thanks to the person who made this available to the public.
Quality here is VG-EX SBD for the 1st half of the show. Great performance, and also: the only performance of "Sound And Vision" in 1978 (as far as I know).
There's very few recordings of Bowie's terrific 1978 tour available in SBD quality. I can only think of 3, all of which are incomplete: Tokyo, Bremen and Dallas, plus the offical 2LP release "Stage". 2nd half of this bootleg is taken from an audience source. I don't know who taped that one. But in October 23rd 2013, a torrent was shared on MWP that featured this same show, taken from an audience recording (almost the same day as this bootleg was released). I am not a member there, but I've been told it was uploaded that day. Strangely enough, that "tape tranferred torrent" had the same "title" as this Japanese bootleg, allthough the torrent didn't feature any SBD recordings. I will include a little info about this share (I have been sent the info file of this torrent by someone) here, allthough I don't know if it's the same source as disc 2 of this torrent here. The uploader wrote: "Cassette of unknown generation -> transfer via Onkyo tapedeck TA-2330 -> Magix Music Cleaning Lab (remaster/edit) -> FLAC (44,1 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo) -> MWP [...]
Unfortunately my tape starts in the middle of "Heroes", so not only half of this song but also Warszawa is missing. The sound of the tape is in my opinion even better than the MSG tape as it has also a quite good bass. So I just improved the treble a bit and made some sound level corrections. [...] Nevertheles a very good sounding recording. Uploaded to MWP by learm 2013/10/23"
So, many thanks to mr. learm. The quality of that capture is listenable. Nowhere as good as the SBD source obviously, nor as good as the best AUD captures of 1978 (Vienna, Gothenburg, etc) but surely  among the better 1978 captures, stil. And also many thanks to the person who spread the SBD recording outside the "circles of the few". I would have credited you if I could.

This show saw Andrew Eldritch telling HoB staff to turn off the house overhead TV monitors so that the audience's attention would be focused on the stage itself.  But of course Andrew also had his tech crew set up foggers onstage, and by the time the band came on you could barely see them.  A couple songs in, the fire alarms went off and emergency house lights were activated.  I believe the Cleveland Fire Department showed up, but were sent away after learning the alarms were triggered by the band's toys.  Midway through the concert, the stage was completely obscured by smoke and you only got an occasional glimpse of the guitarists, or Andrew's forearms gripping the mic stand.  And the venue's emergency lights remained on--staff shut them off, but they kept going on because the band never turned off the foggers.  You'll hear some people calling for staff to deactivate them, but it was out of their control. A lot of folks got up and left.  You really couldn't see much of anything onstage.  People unawares that SoM don't have a live drummer wouldn't have known the difference--Doktor Avalanche was completely shrouded in smoke.

Jack Bates: Bass
David Potts: Guitar
Andy Poole: Keyboards
Paul Kehoe: Drums

Steve from Wales: Sound Engineer

The Band / Performance:

On the surface, it does seem rather strange that Peter Hook would choose to perform New Order's seminal debut "Movement" and iconic follow-up "Power Corruption And Lies" while the namesake band is still around to perform said songs themselves. If you dig a bit deeper you will find that there is no love lost between Peter and his former bandmates. After two very successful tours performing Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer", Hooky returns to The States two years later to perform the
N.O. classics. Thanks to Ryan J for the tip on openers "Slaves Of Venus" actually being comprised of Peter Hook And The Light, themselves. S.O.V. was a nascent band name considered during the J.D. -> N.O. transition. A fact that seemed to be buried in my subconscious. Not to be caught off guard, I performed a battery swap after the opening set. Still, I wasn't quite prepared for Hooky & Co. to play for another 2 hours 15 minutes. The material was aptly performed by the men, who seem to get better on each go around. David Potts from Revenge/Monaco deftly handles the guitar duties here while Hooky's son Jack proves to be an excellent bass player in his own right. Peter's vocals are still somewhere in the middle of the mix and he does seem to play bass less frequently. No Moby or Perry this time around in L.A. to assist with the vocal duties. The band exited the stage after "Leave Me Alone" and returned for "Everything's Gone Green". They let the machines run for "The Beach", the dub classic of  "Blue Monday". The band decided not to return after closing with "Blue Monday". No "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on this night.

The Recording:

A pretty solid pull from the same relative position as my other two recordings posted here in '10 and '11. I believe my U.P. recording is still kicking around the tracker (http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=335602) if someone cares to seed it. "Closer" has long since fallen off so some kind hearted soul would have to reseed that one. My original torrents are archived on some external drive sitting on a shelf somewhere. There is some clapping and hollering but nothing that blows out my mics. Most were content to stand quietly transfixed, especially during the aptly titled "We All Stand". Overall, I'm pretty happy with the
recording and very happy that I was able to get the whole thing. I decided to include the opening set from S.O.V. as it was the same band. There's some serious dynamic range on "5 8 6" (about +20 dB). So crank that one up.

Of Note:

FAC 93: "Confusion", FAC 103: "Thieves Like Us" and FBN 22: "Murder" were not performed. It may seem like heresy to some, but I would have rather heard these dancehall classics over the Joy Division stuff this time around. I suppose I will have to wait and see if Peter will return to play "Low Life" at some point in time.

A must for fans of: Joy Division, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, The Cure, Moby, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, etc...

Recording / Performance Notes:

After having my rig confiscated at the door at The Troubadour two months prior, it was a small consolation to be able to see Nine Inch Nails once again perform in such an intimate setting and to be able to record the performance. Still, it wasn't without certain (albeit small) sacrifice. I wasn't able to secure tickets to the outside performance directly. Instead, I was forced to opt for studio audience tickets and having to endure 40 minutes of Rob Lowe prattling on about this or that and having to feign a certain level of enthusiasm. After the show proper ended the audience was herded outside. I managed to make a beeline for the left stack and was postioned in an ideal spot of three deep about 15 feet away from the speaker. The view sucked but the sound was amazing. I feel that this recording is an accurate account. Most of the audience cheering was well
behind me except for the occasional shout. No phasing this time around. A slight amount of EQ was applied in Har-Bal to remove a bit of the bass. I edited out Jimmy's and warm-up guy Don's remarks. No great loss.

There has been much debate regarding Trent's return from "self-imposed retirement". Apparently the new album and tour have received mixed reviews and many venues have had large shares of unsold tickets. This wasn't the case at Staples the following night as it was packed to the rafters. Many of the longtime nin faithful have been lost with this new blue-eyed soul direction with the "Alomar-esque" infused riff on "All Time Low". I for one think that the new album is amazing! I don't regard it as a bold statement, rather a well crafted collection of songs and inventive arrangements. I am a huge fan of Pino Palladino as well.
His bass playing IS the bold statement here as evidenced on the slowburn of "Sanctified". Trent and the rest of the band are still a forced to be reckoned with in any live setting.

Of Note:

This was billed as Nine Inch Nails' network television debut. I beg to differ, Dance Party USA...

It was Robin's birthday that day as well.
