RE-UPLOAD: Ministry - Live Sympathy 1982 / 1984 (Flac)

Sometime ago I published a Ministry bootleg called Live Twitch 1986, that I made collecting some live tracks from 1986 that were laying around on the net, nothing totally new, but it made some impact. Now I've been asked by Jenya if I could post it on Flac. I'll do it, but felt like doing another one of these Live CDs first, again nothing that hasn't been shared before, but it's a nice document of early Ministry. This one can be a shock, if you only know Ministry after the sucess of Land of Rape and Honey, but actually there are hints of the future sound of the band as early as 1982, since they were more aggressive live than on record, but also because the more alternative tracks were left out of the "with Synpathy" album ,in a move from the record company trying to sell Ministry as a Synth Pop band. They failed, thankfully :)  Cover done by me, keeping in touch with the simple concept of the other bootleg.

01. Primental
02. Overkill

Audioarchivist notes:
Recording the show... I had seen Ministry a few months earlier at Lollapalooza and to me they were the best thing on the stage that day, so I was excited to record them again! I tried to stand as centrally and as close up in front of the soundboard as I could, to capture as much of a full frontal assault of a wall of sound and music and white noise and distortion and horrible room reverberations as possible! Haha!

Fast forward 25 years or so, and I made a reasonably decent digital transfer of the master cassette that was at the show with me so long ago. The 110 minute tape is thinner than regular tape stock that a 90 minute tape would use, to fit the extra footage onto the same space inside the cassette shell. I find that this can cause some minor dropouts and fluctuations in the recording. In other words, I am not that impressed with this brand and length of tape, for that thin tape. It did, however, capture some extremes of high frequencies for an audience bootleg and the limitations of my rig at the time! So, in a way, it is kind of impressive!

After my initial cleanup and sound processing with Audition and Wavelab and some plugins that I cannot remember, I produced a set of files that sounded good, but had a few distracting moments throughout of people screaming and talking a bit too close to the microphone as well as some loud clapping and other interfering noises. I have used iZotope RX Advanced 2 to minimize clapping of nearby audience before with the click remover, but I began to experiment with spectral editing to manually select and minimize audience screams and talking and whistles and the like without damaging any musical content. After some successful trials, I went back to the original master transfer files to minimize the loud clapping and manually remove most of the annoying talkers, screamers, whistlers, that guy barfing in the corner at one point, etc... This took some time - a lot of time! I must have spent a couple of weeks solid working on this show, 10 or 20 seconds at a time, over and over, to identify and isolate every unwanted sound not made by the band and remove it. Crazy hard work!!! Like photoshop for sound! Then I re-processed this "cleaned" sub-master file again with my effects chain that I had saved from my first attempt, to produce a second set of files that I'm sharing now.

Stuff happens, time passes. I did all this work, and didn't get to posting it, and put it aside. More stuff happened. Long story. Now finding how almost ready this was, and decided to push it over the finish line! Even that took some time...

I've never known the P.N.E. Forum building to have decent sound for concerts - I've referred to it as an echo chamber from hell, and this show was no exception, really. It wasn't the worst I've heard there, and my tape captured a good representation of what I remember hearing at the show. I hope you enjoy it...

Performance / Recording Notes:

I was looking forward to this show for well over a month. The event organizers and producers announced that tickets for the screening of the film (and concert) would be made exclusively for those that purchased the soundtrack at one of four designated stores on RSD.
I spent that time formulating a strategy that would all but guarantee admission. I wound up choosing a store that would open at 6:00 AM on RSD. I arrived at 5:30 PM the day before and camped out overnight. I along with my brother and several others of my friends secured copies of the coveted colored vinyls. In fact, a friend gave me one of his spare tickets. I passed it a long to a taper friend of mine.
In fact, I spent the week before the show trying to flood the venue with tapers. After all was said and done, I know of at least four tapers that were in attendence. I didn't want to leave anything to chance.

Ministry put on a fucking AMAZING SHOW of "Wax Trax Era" material. At first I thought that it was odd or even a cheat that they performed material from "Land", "Mind" and "Psalm" (all on Warners and and HUGE albums). Then I remembered that Al and Paul were still producing material
for Wax Trax! during this time under the guise of Revolting Cocks, LARD, Pigface, 1000 Homo DJ's and other imprints with a revolving line up of musicians from the label. The community of like minded musicians that formed around the genius and generosity of Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher cannot be overstated. The emergance of Industrial Music in all of its forms and incarnations had a profound impact on the music industry that is still being felt today. Wax Trax! was the epicenter from 1983 to 1995. The film takes a look at the founders, Jim and Dannie, and several musicians from Front 242, KMDM, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Trent Reznor, Chris and Cosey and many others. The film and it's accompanying soundtrack comes highly recommended.

Ministry put on a show that's one for the books! Everybody I spoke to afterwards was simply blown away by the performance. Al looks better and sounds better than he has over the last three decades. Hell. He did jumping jacks during Supernaut for fucks sake! If you missed one of these select six shows, I am very sorry! This recording IMHO is about as good as it gets. There is minimal audience interference with the exception of the requisite drunken chick sing-a-long to "Halloween". No special vocal guests on this night, just pure Uncle Al!

A really solid pull off a white hot stack. A slight amount of EQ was performed to even out the sound. Minimal amount of crowd noise as to be expected from a stack tape for such a loud show. I had to declap some areas. There's a few instances of the audience that can be heard between songs, but nothing that interferes with the performance or the enjoyment of the show. I made no edits. Also, "(Everyday Is) Halloween" was boosted by +5dB to bring the levels closer to the rest of the show.

Of Note:

Paul Barker was in attendance and participated in the Q & A and panel discussion after the film. Let's hope that Al is working through his 8th Step. It seems that Al has made ammends with Chris Connelly and is on speaking terms with Paul once again. Vote: Luxa/Pan 2020! Fingers crossed.

Highlights:

The thirteen songs that were performed. It was excellent hearing "Jesus Built My Hot Rod", "No Devotion" and "Supernaut" performed live. Also,"The Land of Rape and Honey" is a personal favorite of mine.
Please support the film maker Julie Nash by purchasing her excellent film "Industrial Accident".

Chris Connelly - Additional Vocals on 17 - 18.
Dave Navarro - Acoustic Guitar and Vocals on 18.
Dan Cleary - Acoustic Guitar and Vocals on 18.

Performance / Recording Notes:

Uncle Al and Co wrap up their AmeriKKKant Tour with a two night run at Hollywood's iconic Fonda Theatre. The band performed two brief sets. The first was comprised solely of the band's latest album, AmeriKKKant. The second was comprised of classic trax with four songs
culled from The Land of Rape and Honey, including the seldomly played "Stigmata". I never set out to see Ministry three times over the course of 18 months (I actually missed a show last November at The Palladium). However, when I saw that he was playing nearly half of  Rape and Honey, I knew that it would be a must see / must tape show! Holy crap am I sure glad that I did, because what happened next was truly unexpected and historical. After the encore break, Al returne to the stage accompanied by Cesar and Chris with Dave and Dan on acoustic guitars. He then says the following...

"We're sick of playing old shit right now. So we decided right now that we're gonna play something older...".

He then broke into an acoustic version of "(Everyday is) Halloween". WHAT! Did we just become brothers!? YEP!!! It's been 30+ years since Al has played this song live! The audience was completely enthralled! In fact the guy to my right even said "I'll be quiet during this song!"

A really solid pull off a white hot stack. A bit of EQ was performed to recover some of the bass that was a bit lacking because of the battery box settings. Minimal amount of crowd noise as to be expected from a stack tape for such a loud show. I had to declap some areas.
There's a few instances of the audience that can be heard between songs, but nothing that interferes with the performance or the enjoyment of the show. A few judicious edits of crowd noise were made between sets and during the encore break. No music was lost. Also, "(Everyday Is) Halloween" was boosted by +6dB to bring the levels closer to the rest of the show.

Of Note:

The show opened with a 3 minute trailer of the Wax Trax documentary entitled "Industrial Accident". It also sounds to me as though Derek is slightly off click on "Stigmata". Still a phenomenal show!

Highlights:

Chris Connelly on 10 monumental minutes of "So What" and the oldies: "The Land of Rape and Honey" and "Everyday Is Halloween" of course.
Now can Al please make nice with Paul Barker as well so we can get this fucking show on the road?

Please support the band by purchasing their latest album AmeriKKKant or by going to see them on tour...

Performance / Recording Notes:

Uncle Al and Co make their way to San Diego. One of the epicenters for the underground industrial / goth scene of the late 80's.
Al (quite falsely) presumes that the audience is full of a bunch of Comic-Con "nerds" that wandered in off the street. He makes a few chidding comments throughout the show, only to conclude by the end of the show, that the audience was quite good. I'm not sure if we got a shorter set than the SLO show the following night because of this. Nevertheless, the band comes out swinging (quite
literally) with the one-two punch of "Punch in the Face" and "Rio Grande Blood" followed by "Señor Peligro" and "LiesLiesLies" before coming up for air. Al looks the best he's looked over the past ten years or so. The constant supply of "medicinal" marijuana in L.A. seems to agree with Al. He nursed a single 16 oz can of Miller Lite throughout the show. For those of you who think this may
have soften the edges or rounded the corners from the performance, would be sorely mistaken. He takes no prisoners here as he stalks the stage for some 80 minutes and turns in a performance that rivals Lolla II in 1992, sans the burning mosh pit. This recording should satisfy most.

This was my first time seeing Ministry since 2006's "MasterBaTour" with a reconstituted RevCo. When I saw $10 tickets pop up on StubHub, I was pretty fucking determined to see these guys again. The only issue was enduring a 230 mile roundtrip drive to downtown San Diego during Comic-Con. I took nearly three hours to get there in Friday traffic, but it was still worth the trip. I was a bit disappointed to not hear "Kyber Pass" and "Stigmata". Apparently Al hates the song (latter) now, although I haven't read his book yet.

A pretty solid pull off the right stack. A bit of EQ was performed to recover some of the bass that was a bit lacking over the wall of guitars. Minimal amount of crowd noise as to be expected from a stack tape for such a loud show. I had to declap some areas especially "So What" when a guy behind me decided to "contribute". On a side note, thanks for dialing back the strobelights, Al. When
I saw them 11 years ago, I had to stop watching the show. I didn't want to wind up on the floor with my wallet in my mouth.

Highlights:

The oldies: "N.W.O.", "Just One Fix", "So What", "Thieves" and "Psalm 69". The new track "Antifa" from the forthcoming "AmeriKKKant" complete with leather clad biker chicks swinging red and black flags around was pretty cool as well. Al pleads "WE ARE NOT SNOWFLAKES!"
If he's referring to millenials, as a whole, then I have to respectfully disagree. Still, enough of them left their safe spaces to come see the show. ;-)

The Debate:

I remmeber nearly 30 years ago, my cousin told me how much he liked Motley Crue because they were so fucking hardcore. Keep in mind, that this conversation took place years before "Hardcore", "Thrash", and "Death Metal" were in the common lexicon. Sure there were some speedy guitarists out there (Yngvie, anyone?) but nobody, I mean nobody, had a live show like "Ministry". The ferocity of punk combined with the wall of sound of industrial and heavy metal guitar riffs thrown in for good measure created something dark, sinister and foreboding. I told my cousin that the guys from Motley Crue were "pussies" or something to that effect. He said: "No way. These guys drink Jack and do a lotta coke and trash hotel rooms." I think I said, "I'm pretty sure that Zeppelin did all that shit 15 years ago."
"Besides if you're truly hardcore you don't wear pink scarves AND the guy from Ministry does speed and shoots heroin." I later said "Ministry performs behind a chain link fence in order to protect the audience." He said, "WHAAAAT???" I said, "Yeah, if you go to one of their shows, you still might get KILLED!" He said, "WOW! NO SHIT!!!" And so began the legend...

"And lets not forget his wild life and crazy antics (Al Jourgensen) that make Motley Crue look like school boys." - James Currie

RE-UPLOAD: Revolting Cocks - The Ritz, New York, NY, USA - 09.08.1990 (Flac)

Very good sound. Trent Reznor is guest vocals on Supernaut, and contrary to what's on the original info file you can hear his voice during the song, Thanks to uuuugh for making this recording avaiable again on DIME.

recording is as well. Despite that, I hope you all enjoy it!
