Poor quality due to either not enough power in the batteries or it was too loud / too near the speakers, possibly both but most likely the batteries.  In the absence of a better recording of this gig someone's bound to want it.  For completists only, don't say you weren't warned.

The first instrumental song is called "The Thrash".  This was either read off the setlist or someone asked a band member, again it's too long ago to remember which.  In setlists for this period Roseofavalanche.com has the song titled as "Darkorjan".  I remember when the "In Rock" album was released the band weren't too happy as the record company used a bunch of unfinished session tapes so I assume Darkorjan to be a working title, so I'm going with "The Thrash" as being the correct title.  (Oh and I just saw on ROA.com that that winter tour was called "Winter Thrash Tour", so that makes sense.)

There's a cut 0:46 into Always There caused by someone moshing into the tape recorder.

I finally managed to get a camcorder to play my old tapes.  The camcorder that I filmed these on gave up the ghost years ago. I had it repaired once, filmed one more gig, and it broke again.  For the last few weeks I've been looking for a replacement and after finding one last month that would play SP but not LP (75% of my tapes are in long play) I managed to get one this afternoon.  And wasting no time, here's something quite special.

I'm told there's some dispute over whether they played this gig as The Rose Of Avalanche or some other name.  I can state absolutely 100% this was definitely a Rose Of Avalanche gig.
It was advertised as such on Duchess flyers, as well as the notice pinned on the door that night.
Also before Always There, Phil says "This is it, the last song of the last gig of The Rose Of Avalanche".  Before Too Many Castles there's a shout of "What's the new name?" to which Glenn jokes "We'll have a Blue Peter competition"(to decide the name).  Blue Peter(for anyone overseas who might not know) being a kids tv show that has lots of competitions.

Before the first song starts, Phil sings a little bit of Zippedy Doo Dah.  We're then treated to quite a few new songs.  Phil says the titles of some of them, but there's 4 I don't know and had to guess, they're the one with (?) after the name.

I greatly enjoyed watching this video this afternoon as I transferred it.  The sound is excellent, and I did my best with the filming.

As far as I remember I recorded it with my old AIWA-walkman and an extra stereo-microphone
(I do not remember what kind of equipment I used those days, sorry!).

It was recorded from the famous Bochum, Zeche-stairs very near to stage on the right side
where I often sat down and could record the concerts very easily getting the best sound.
The sound quality is excellent -.

The Rose Of Avalanche supported The Mission that evening. I do remember their
gig as a very boring one, but do have no memories of this The Rose Of Avalanche - gig at all.
Anyway, hope you out there will like it.

RE-UPLOAD: The Rose Of Avalanche - Rehearsal - 1985 (Flac)

Thanks to Egg_Crisis for another great one.

I'm listing this as 1985 as that's what it's always been traded as since I got the tape in 1987.  I've got a feeling it might be earlier though...

They used a drum machine until Mark Thompson joined the group in April'86 and I feel that this recording is earlier than this.  I'm thinking maybe late 1984/early 1985 and that they might have done some rehearsals with a real drummer which would therefore have to have been someone else and not Mark Thompson.

If this was April'86 (and if it's Mark Thompson on drums it can be no earlier) then it seems very strange for them to be playing a whole bunch of covers and songs that never made it to their live repertoire, and they sound so rough and unpolished which seems unlikely if it's 1986.  I'm thinking this is more likely to be from the very early stages of the band before they started gigging.  Suggestions & ideas please?

I've managed to identify two of the songs as covers.  After owning the tape for a few years(!) I realised track 8 was a cover of the Stones' Sympathy For The Devil.  Just the day after I encoded this I was googling fragments of lyrics I could make out and discovered track two was a cover of The Changeling by The Doors.  I haven't a clue about the other six but I suspect some of them might be covers also.  Track 7 sounds a bit Bauhaus-ish to my ears.

Whereas tracks 1-8 are probably recorded on a simple tape recorder plonked on the floor of the rehearsal room (and I think someone moved the tape recorder between tracks 4 & 5 as the quality improves very slightly), track 9 is a rehearsal or maybe even a studio recording, and in good stereo too!  I compared that track with the officially released version of too Many Castles just to make sure it wasn't the same version but they're different.

*normalise L&R channels, tidying up a few clicks, repairing some dropouts, no processing except for some noise reduction on the opening 10 seconds of studio chatter/closing 3 seconds of the last track with Adobe Audition as the hiss was quite noticeable during that part.
Track 7 was split over 2 sides of the tape.  When I tried joining the 2 parts together I noticed the same phrase repeated just before and just after the split, so did an edit to join the two halves seamlessly, losing about 2 seconds of audio (the join is at 3:16 in track 7).  However: the repeated part wasn't an overlap but a repetition of the same verse later in the song so a portion of the song which was missing on my tape might exist in other copies.

Acquired in a trade 20 years ago.

Quite a long intro, including Majesty playing over the PA.  Velveteen had only just been released.  Always There is introduced as a "brand spanking new song". After Gimme Some Loving', the band (mostly Glenn?) go into a bit of a jam, ending up playing Wild Thing.  This, combined with the Doors cover, really demonstrates their influences, despite the goth tag they ended up with.  Phill still sounds young, but is beginning to pick up some of his more confrontational attitude with audiences, which was missing in earlier gigs.

In summer 1988, the Rose of Avalanche played a series of gigs in Leeds under the moniker "Absolutely Anything".  This is the final one of 3 I have on tape, this time at the Haddon Hall pub in the Burley area of Leeds.  The band had been on a bit of a hiatus due to the contract dispute with Fire Records.  They mostly played newer tracks, but none that hadn't been played live before and this was the same setlist as the second Duchess gig.

In summer 1988, the Rose of Avalanche played a series of gigs in Leeds under the moniker "Absolutely Anything".  This is the second of 3 I have on tape.  The band had been on a bit of a hiatus due to the contract dispute with Fire Records.  They mostly played newer tracks, but none that hadn't been played live before.

They were supporting Steve Diggle (ex-Buzzcocks). Despite it being a secret gig, as a support act, playing under a different name, Phill seems to expect a much larger and more enthusiastic audience. He references the Fire debacle and their unapproved release of In Rock.

I've been to Huddersfield Snakepit (although not on this occasion).  The stage was about 8 feet high with the standing area right in front of the stage, so whoever was nearest the front would have the worst view.  That might account for the slightly odd (but not bad) sound quality.

I used to take the tapes apart and shorten the leader tape from the end of side A meaning I could let the tape run to the end so it auto-reversed and only missed around half a second.  Tape flip during intro of If You Only Knew (0:52 into song). As that part was just a drumbeat & guitar I joined it on a drumbeat, losing less than a second of audio in the process but making a nice seamless edit.

Warm up for the German tour that started a few days later, with the same set-list as those dates, notable only for probably the first play of Ride The Storm. Taped by Steve Syson on a recorder left by the mixing desk. It sounds a bit murky in places, but very listenable. Odd chants of Neighbours. Also a cry of "Petal Patrol" for any old hands out there.
