RE-UPLOAD: Dawn After Dark - Demos 1986 (Flac)

Egg_Crisis uncovers another rarity of his magnificent collection. Huge Thank You to him for sharing this one here! It's quite difficult to find the other EPs that this band recorded, maybe someone has them and is willing to share?

cassette(unknown gen) > wav > used right channel only as left had faded almost to nothing (for that reason the flacs are half the size they'd normally be) > Adobe Audition(Hiss removal-light setting) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

02 Inspiration
03 Her Sleep
04 Electric Underground

RE-UPLOAD: Dawn After Dark - Live Hard And Groovin (Unreleased Live Album) - 1989 (Flac)

Another rarity shared by Egg_Crisis.

01 Nothing Can Fulfill Me Without Your Love
02 Kick Started Love
03 Truth & Freedom
04 Crystal High
05 Sweet Chiquita
06 Wild Wild Love

Length - 25:39

cassette(low gen,maybe 3rd gen,TDK SF90) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels for each track) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

A bad dropout at 0:49 in track 5 was patched with a tiny piece (120ms) from 4:01.  It's not perfect but it sounds better than leaving it as it was.

Recorded Summer 1989, planned for release by Revolver Records but cancelled.

RE-UPLOAD: Dawn After Dark - Junction 10, Walsall, UK, - 01.04.1989 (Flac)

Cassette(Audience,1st gen,Sony FN90) > wav > Adobe Audition(Dehiss left channel of side B-tracks 12-20) > Soundforge(normalise,only used right channel of side A) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

The tape ran out during "Maximum Overdrive" and wasn't noticed for a couple of minutes. (Comparing with other versions, the last 44 sec is missing from "Maximum Overdrive" and the first 53 sec is missing from "Don't Fuck  Wiv Her 'Ead".)

There's a stop/start after Make Me Proud, nothing missed.  A couple of times you can hear the guy on the merchandise stall trying to sell t-shirts - the recording must have been made near the back, or it's a small venue and the guy just had a loud voice!

For side A of the cassette the left channel was very poor, fading almost to nothing in parts.  It wasn't worth saving (I tried), and in the end decided to copy the right channel over to the left, so tracks 1 to 11 are in what I call "double mono".  Side B was in a lot better shape and the left channel just needed a light dehissing.

They play an extra long set to make up for the gig being cut short last time they were in Birmingham(Xmas'88).

01 Intro
02 Crystal High
03 Midnight Train
04 Let Me Touch

Dawn After Dark - Lords Of Sound Studio Rehearsals - 1990 (Flac)

Someone asked for more Dawn After Dark, so here it is. The bad news it's this seems to be the last gem from the band on Egg_Crisis collection. Anyway, enjoy and ultra Thanks to Egg_Crisis for his precious posts here.

Cassette(low gen,maybe 3rd gen,TDK SF90) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels for each track) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)
The titles of tracks 1 & 2 are my own invention.
Track 1 is NOT a cover of the Metallica song of the same name.
There's a weird whistle for a few seconds near the end of track 2, it was like that when I got it.

Tracks 5 & 6 are distorted in the left channel.  I could've copied the right channel over, but didn't because it's stereo, the left channel having more bass in some parts for example.

This is Dawn After Dark, presumably with H's replacement on vocals, Johnny Stevenson.
At the time I received this tape I was told that the band had renamed themselves as "Lords Of Sound", presumably after their song of the same name.

There's not much information about this period in the band's history, and what little information there is conflicts with each other.  For example the bands myspace says H quit in 1990, was replaced by Johnny Stevenson in 1991, and the band split early 1992.  This seems a bit long and drawn-out to me.
Another site said H left in 1990, then a British tour with Johnny Stevenson in July 1990 then the band split up after that.  To me, this version seems more likely.

I wasn't even aware this incarnation of the band had done any gigs until reading about it on the net this year.  If anyone has any further information please comment!

Dawn After Dark - Demos - xx.xx.1989 (Flac)

Again thanks to Egg_Crisis for this rarity from Dawn After Dark.

01 Lovin' Made Easy
02 Crawl Away
03 Ride
04 Monkey Paw
05 Hit & Run (end cut)
06 Shakin'

Length - 23:28

cassette(low gen,maybe 3rd gen,TDK SF90) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels for each track) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

The end of Hit & Run is missing where the tape ran out.  It doesn't sound like there's a lot missing.  Also the sound goes a bit wobbly towards the end of the song.

I received this tape with no date listed.  I'm assuming it's from late 1989.  It's definitely not from early in the bands existence like those 1986 demos - the performance is a lot more polished and the songs sound more like the sort of stuff the band was doing in 1989.

As of Sept'89 none of these 6 songs had appeared in the bands live set.  That was the last time I saw the band, I don't know how much longer they continued.  I think H quit in early 1990 so these demos must be from those final few months before he quit the band.  Of course I may have this totally wrong!  If anyone's got any further info then make a comment!

I missed the Intro and the start of No Shame, so the Intro & a complete No Shame (TDK D90, probably 2nd gen) have been edited in from someone elses recording...  Back in the day I'd copied my tape for several people and in one trade of several Dawn After Dark items I received a copy of Leeds which started off as the other source then cut to my Leeds recording (after a few generations) after No Shame.  The edit was pretty good, but I've used my master rather than the copy and improved the edit.  Also for completeness I've included my incomplete recording of No Shame.  I wonder why they edited that first song into my recording?  The other source sounds a bit better than mine.

Dawn After Dark - Crystal High (1st single, April 1988, FLAC)

The contributions of Egg_Crisis to DCR just started two days ago, but today they lift off to really high levels, with three gems not to be missed. First one is this rip of the first single by a lost and forgotten band from the 80's. A Huge Thank You to him.

Some info about the band taken from their MySpace:

Formed in 1986 and based in Birmingham the early Dawn After Dark were heavily influenced by bands such as Death Cult and these influences showed heavily on their first demos...

Relentless gigging and general badgering brought them to the attention of Chapter 22 Records and London based Metropolis music, who became the bands management... 1987 saw the band traverse the UK as headliners and as support act to New Model Army, Ghost Dance, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Swans and the Rose of Avalanche...

1988 saw the release of Crystal High on Chapter 22 Records and saw the band tour with Fields of the Nephilim on the mark of the watchman tour. This saw the band gain a following in the shape of the Warriors, later to become the Dawn Losers, basically a hardcore group of kitbag toting lunatics that followed and supported the band everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Crystal High sold out in the first week of the Nephilim Tour and 'Dawners' T shirts appeared everywhere... 1

988 saw the release of The Groove and more tours followed with Balaam and the Angel, Living Colour, Gaye Bikers on Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, The Wonderstuff. The Groove appeared in the indie charts and the band appeared in full page spreads/interviews in Kerrang and numerous fanzines. To top it all Dawn After Dark appeared it the top 20 best new bands in Sounds music poll of 1988. ..

1989 started to see the demise of the 'alternative' scene and in a bid to survive the changes Dawn After Dark rightly or wrongly started to change their sound and a heavier influence came in...

1989 saw the release of Maximum overdrive and gigs with The Dogs D'Amour, All About Eve and touring with Wolfsbane followed. Dawn after dark headlined and filled venues such as the Marquee and Irish Centre in Birmingham
