Notes
1] I'm not an enormous Reznor fan, but another taper I know is, and got me interested in going out to
   tape his projects, primarily NIN, but that will have to wait for a little while longer. I wasn't
   very impressed with the studio material, although it certainly isn't bad, but I found it far more
   enjoyable in a live setting, but still not quite my thing. Of some note, is that this was one of
   three shows to sell out, and I believe the only one to have sold out during the general pre-sale.
   The other two were/are the show in San Francisco, and the show next week in New York. Plenty of
   tickets were available on StubHub for this show, though, and I don't know many people were inside
   as compared to the amount of tickets sold, but, both the balcony and floor were packed.

2] I'm always pleased when I find myself at the Vic because it's a rather nice venue. Though it may
   be lightly dilapidated on the inside, the sightlines are very good in the balcony, the seats are
   still comfortable enough, and the sound is excellent and what I consider to the be the highlight
   of going to the Vic Theatre. Thus far, the Vic is the venue I've pulled at the most in my taping
   ventures and I've always left with something rather nice to listen to, this being no exception.

3] Aside from the Vic's excellent sound, the crowd was mostly respectable. As was noted in another
   HTDA torrent, everyone here was very chatty, but largely during the opener (which wasn't DIIV for
   us, unfortunately, as they had been trapped in a snow storm) and not during HtDA. The people directly
   in front of me weren't talkers by any means and didn't clap as far as I noticed, and though I had
   a ham-slapper to my right, she isn't as prominent as I had feared. Lots of hoots and hollers
   during HtDA, particularly when either Trent or Mariqueen did anything remotely interesting, and
   one right behind me at some point, but nothing terrible.

The Performance and Recording:

Trent Reznor makes his return to live performance after a nearly 4 year hiatus as a member of the ambient electronic collective "How To Destroy Angels". This is clearly a project that includes unique contributions from all its members. I'm not quite sure that the inner workings of the group would constitute a democratic process. After all Trent's trademark NIN "sound" can be heard
throughout. Still, it's Mariqueen's vocals that are the centerpiece for most songs. Atticus' arangements can be heard throughout  the performance as well. Fans of "Ghosts", "The Social Network" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" will really appreciate the live performance. It goes without saying that what Rob has created with the visual elements is simple, effective and stunning.
It shares elements of the WT and LITS tours on a more intimate and immersive scale. I really don't want to give too much away.
If you are attending one of the select performances, do yourself a favour and avoid any YouTube or Coachella broadcast spoilers until you see the show for yourself live. Finally, NIN knob twiddler extraordinaire and synthesizer maker Alessandro Cortini rounds out the sound with some excellent bass playing. Songs are pretty faithful recreations of the album versions. One notable exception is that the banjo riff on "ice age" has been supplanted by a muted dulcimer sound.

The Recording / Theater:

After attendining Duran Duran's Coachella sideshow performance in this venue 2 years prior, I knew that I faced myriad challenges with this venue. The Art Deco theater originally built during Hollywood's Golden Age was fully renovated and restored in 2007 after several decades of decay. Goldenvoice handles all concert promotions at the venue which employs no staff since it remains vacant for the
majority of each month. Like it's cousin The Wiltern it has a magnificent balcony and high ornate ceilings. It employs an array of ceiling stack speakers that are situated some 30+ feet apart. Needless to say taping with omnis here can be quite challenging. The crowd on the floor didn't make matters any easier. There are those in the audience that are compelled to: 1. Chat incessantly. 2. Holler when
things have been too quiet and mommy hasn't heard their voice in a while. 3. Have inappropriate and profane tourette outbursts. 4. Profess their undying adulation for Trent, Q, whoever. 5. Binge drink. Pretty fun for a Wednesday in the I.E. I'd like to say much of this is off-mic but it isn't entirely and their is enough to take you out of the performance during many quieter moments. The audience for the
most part settles down and settles in for the second half of the show. Levels were all over the map. I will say that the recording has it's share of dynamic range. I did resist the urge to normalize the volume levels of all the tracks. I applied a pretty modest +3dB bump for the quiter portions. I took out a fair amount of boom through Har-Bal, but the sound remains pretty open and spacious which complements the material for the most part. I know that there will be at least one other source out there so you may want to wait. This isn't my best work but hardly my worst pull either. IMHO it remains an excellent document to this act's debut performance and is still very enjoyable.
