Recording / Performance Notes:
After having my rig confiscated at the door at The Troubadour two months prior, it was a small consolation to be able to see Nine Inch Nails once again perform in such an intimate setting and to be able to record the performance. Still, it wasn't without certain (albeit small) sacrifice. I wasn't able to secure tickets to the outside performance directly. Instead, I was forced to opt for studio audience tickets and having to endure 40 minutes of Rob Lowe prattling on about this or that and having to feign a certain level of enthusiasm. After the show proper ended the audience was herded outside. I managed to make a beeline for the left stack and was postioned in an ideal spot of three deep about 15 feet away from the speaker. The view sucked but the sound was amazing. I feel that this recording is an accurate account. Most of the audience cheering was well
behind me except for the occasional shout. No phasing this time around. A slight amount of EQ was applied in Har-Bal to remove a bit of the bass. I edited out Jimmy's and warm-up guy Don's remarks. No great loss.
There has been much debate regarding Trent's return from "self-imposed retirement". Apparently the new album and tour have received mixed reviews and many venues have had large shares of unsold tickets. This wasn't the case at Staples the following night as it was packed to the rafters. Many of the longtime nin faithful have been lost with this new blue-eyed soul direction with the "Alomar-esque" infused riff on "All Time Low". I for one think that the new album is amazing! I don't regard it as a bold statement, rather a well crafted collection of songs and inventive arrangements. I am a huge fan of Pino Palladino as well.
His bass playing IS the bold statement here as evidenced on the slowburn of "Sanctified". Trent and the rest of the band are still a forced to be reckoned with in any live setting.
