RE-UPLOAD: Delta 5 - Club 57, New York, NY, USA - 23.05.1981 (Flac)

Thanks to Cyrus for sharing this recording on Dime.

Original Info File:

I remember get their singles one, two and three from late 1979 through 1980 and thinking
that this group was destined for greatness.  Their minimal approach to both lyrics and
music while still being catchy as hell, not to mention their concise sense of irony - Wow!
They knocked me out.  Others must have thought so too and gave them access to a studio full
of cool gadgets, andÉwell, trouble in paradise.  Their debut LP, "See The Whirl" in 1981
was an over produced mess that lost all that was right about the group's initial approach.
Well, folks, here they perform most of said LP, and live without all of the studio whiz
one can see that this stuff wasn't half bad after all.

I believe this was taped by our own "dclubok", and if so, he may be able to comment on
the equipment used, etc.  Doug, are you out there?  Anyway I seeded this on DIME some
eight or nine years ago, and it's definitely time to return it to circulation.

Cheers, Cyrus

49:11 minutes - Sound: Good to Very Good
The first several seconds of the first cut sound atrocious!  But it clears up quickly
and the sound continues to improve over the first two or three cuts.  After that it's
not too bad at all.  There is a drop out as Curcuit ends, and comes back abruptly with
temporarily inferior sound...and once again it gets better.

Along with the Stuttgart 1984-11-12 show, this is possibly my favourite Sisters bootleg,
some great between-song banter from Eldritch. This is a great sounding show, at times it's
like a soundboard. This doesn't seem to circulate as much as some of the others from this
tour like the Lyceum, Newcastle and Brighton shows. Any show with 'Some Kind of Stranger'
deserves a listen and add 'Stairway' in there with the priceless, 'There's a bus goes now from
out there and you'd be advised...' intro and you've got a must have show.

Scan of tape inlay included.

Total running time: 104:57

I leave the dreary Dutch weather behind and catch the Thalys train to Paris,
where the city is basking in glorious sunshine and it's considerably warmer.

After checking into my hotel, I head over to Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés and
spend the afternoon sitting outside Café de Flore, drinking freshly squeezed
lemon juice and watching the stylish Parisians walk by. It's the perfect way
to while away the afternoon.

And with the afternoon thusly dispensed of, it's time to catch the Métro over
to Porte de Pantin. After a quick phone call home to say goodnight to my
children, I saunter along the tree-lined avenue that leads to Zénith de Paris
(a.k.a. Le Zénith) and find Timo waiting for me.

The band have sold out this huge 6,000+ seat venue tonight: an impressive
feat. Unfortunately, it's not a terribly pleasant place, being strongly
reminiscent of an American cinema complex, complete with ushers and people
vending ice-cream in the break between the support and the headliner. Worst of
all, though, is the unbearable heat. It's like a furnace in here.

Things tonight are running half an hour ahead of the usual schedule. David
Kuckhermann therefore comes on at 19:30 and surprises me once again by
inviting yet another guest to join him on stage for a duet. This time, it's
the turn of Céline Wadier, who provides vocals on 'The Sound Of Viborg'. And
so another unique recording is born.

Dead Can Dance follow at 20:30 and work through their now more than familiar
set. Even the bodily motion of the performers follows the same choreographed
script from one night to the next, with Jules Maxwell consistently lurching to
his left as he belts out the synthesised brass of 'Amnesia', and Astrid
Williamson's fingers performing the same graceful glide over the keys during
that song's final bars.

The band are clearly in good spirits and enjoying the concert to the full. As
in Amsterdam, the performance seems to have an edge that was missing on
earlier dates.

The show slowly becomes a standing event during the encores, with masses of
people making their way down to the foot of the stage to dance and take photos
of their heroes. I'm forced to rise to my feet, too, in order to maintain any
semblance of a direct line to the PA.

There's a minor set-list change tonight, too, but don't get your hopes up too

'Return Of The She-King is preceded by Gerrard leading in an impromptu
rendition of 'Happy Birthday' for Perry, who turned 54 today. He blows her a
kiss in return.

I can't say for sure whether Dead Can Dance were as enjoyable as my afternoon
on the terrace of Café de Flore, wrapping my tongue around a Chocolat
Liégeois, but at least the experience wasn't miserable or boring. The gig
passed by relatively quickly, even with the awful heat to contend with.

My location on the right-hand side of the centre block of row 4 wasn't ideal
for recording the show. I was too far forward, with most of the PA towering
overhead. I therefore directed my left microphone at the overhead left PA and
aimed the right microphone at the floor-standing bass speakers on the right.

The result is a recording with a beefy bass, but not overpoweringly so. It's
surprisingly pleasant to listen to and I'm happy with how the recording has
turned out.

Gary Numan (born Gary Webb on 8 March 1958) is an English singer,
composer, and musician, most widely known for his chart-topping
1979 hits "Are 'Friends' Electric?" (with Tubeway Army) and "Cars".
His signature sound consisted of heavy synthesizer hooks fed
through guitar effects pedals.

Commercially unsuccessful for many years of his career, Numan is
nevertheless considered a pioneer of commercial electronic music.
His use of themes from science fiction, and his combination of
aggressive punk energy with electronics, have since been widely imitated.

TB AM 2448 Master

Recorded from squelchy medium wave radio (that's what the Beeb broadcast pre-Peel R1 on during those days) here's the debut radio session for goths Gene Loves Jezebel. There was a subsequent Peel session on FM in September 1983 but this was commercially released. The Jensen session never has been.
