RE-UPLOAD: The Sisters Of Mercy - Lyceum, London, UK - 25.03.1985 - SN Remaster (Flac)

Very good remastering of an already good sounding soundboard recording. Thanks to  steve for remastering and sharing it

Original Notes:

Source: Cassette - ION Tape2PC - Audacity - CD Wave - Flac (level 8) -
Remastering>Hiss removal, EQ & stereo expansion with adobe audition 3>you
**New MD5 created

The original, although a nice enough recording, suffered from hissing & was a bit thin & dry for my taste. Quite tiring to listen to all the way through.
Noise floor changed to -23.4dB & hiss reduced by 24dB
Stereo image has also been widened to 166%
EQ-d to warm up the bottom end & take the edge off the snare sound.
Tried to bring Marx up in the mix, but the results just made my teeth hurt.
Hope you like the result.

The Cure - Capitol Theatre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia - 17.08.1981 (Flac)

Excellent PreFM recording of the Picture Tour for the Faith album with the extra 4 songs from FM.. This version was recently shared on Dime, minus the song Faith, which is included in this link, and banned because of  suspicion of lossy ancestry.
The spectrum posted at Dime that showed cut off leading to claims of lossy lineage is the same as other versions of FM recordings from the 80’s, it’s also the same as the FM recording from the 2005 6 song broadcast, which means that the original master is the cause of the lossy looming spectrum, it has nothing to do with the use of any type of lossy process when editing it,

Huge Thanks to Brent Graham for sending me the link to share here.

Master clean up / edited / shared by Brent Graham.

***Australian version, 11 songs digitized from 1/4 inch reel to reel tape, multitrack mix master.
***Plus 4 songs not included in the Australian version, digitized from master cassette tape (first tape no copies) recording of Canadian radio broadcast in the 80's.

Today 14th April 2021 is 40 years since the release of The Cure's 1981 Faith album, I think the 40th anniversary would be a good time to share one of the rarities I have in my live Cure collection, the best sound quality recording I have of the tour from 1/4 inch reel to reel tape, I know that no other person has this, so this is a first for anyone to hear this in such great quality! No doubt it's the best sound quality anyone will have heard from the Picture Tour for the Faith album, there were better performances / shows, but this is undoubtedly the best sound quality of anything out there from
1981, so for the 40th anniversary of the albums release I'd like to put it out there and share it with everybody...

To make the show as complete as possible I have patched in 4 songs from a master cassette tape recording from Canadian radio in the 80's (In Your House, Primary, Jumping Someone Else's Train and Another Journey by Train), those 4 songs were not included in the Australian broadcast, the quality of those 4 songs is OK but not great, but the best that can be found.

The 1/4 inch tape digitization did not have Robert's comment before Faith "This is the last song it's called Faith" or the comment after Faith "Thank you good night", so I have patched in those 2 comments by taking them from the Charlotte Sometimes 12" vinyl single (the live version of Faith on the Charlotte Sometimes 12" vinyl single B-Side is from this show). The reason I sourced the comments from the 12" vinyl and not from the extras CD of the Faith album remaster is because the 12" vinyl single has a longer amount of crowd noise before Faith than the remaster bonus CD, which allowed me to seamlessly join up the crowd in between A Forest and Faith without having a cut in the crowd between the 2 songs.

I needed to do a bunch of fixing/cleaning up ("mastering") on the 1/4 inch tape digitization, the left channel was noticeably less bright sounding and lower volume than the right channel, I'm unsure if it was damaged tape edge, incorrect azimuth or tape head alignment during digitization, or maybe for some strange reason was EQ'd down, but after some time and effort I have got it to closely match the right channel and sound as it should (EQ'd left channel separately to match right, EQ'd both channels together). I also did a bunch of work on the 4 songs from Canadian radio broadcast (swapped left & right channels, EQ'd, lowered volume, and corrected speed-tempo & pitch -2.6% / -2.9% (about 45-50 cents as the cassette tape was playing quite fast).
I also EQ'd and lowered volume of the comments before and after Faith taken from the Charlotte Sometimes 12" vinyl single B-side. Overall no real problems anymore, the 1/4 tape has a bit of hiss sometimes noticeable left channel, but nothing bad, it is related to the very slight tape damage or digitizing issues I mentioned above. The main problem with the 4 songs from radio cassette tape was that the hit-hat was almost ear piercing, so I brought 12.k down around -13dB which has improved it greatly, but will never be able to be fixed properly.
I think it should sound good with standard type bass/treble controls around about bass 40% / treble 60% / subwoofer pretty low !?!?
This is all of the songs that exist of this show from this 1/4 inch tape source, after the multitrack tapes were mixed and edited down for Australian & Canadian 1981 radio broadcasts they were probably re-used / recorded over, but I think likely were given to Robert Smith, as I do know that Robert has multitracks of the show because he told me himself...
It would be nice to hear a full show re-mix from Robert's multitracks some day!, some of the mixing could be improved!

Some notes...
Faith from this show was officially released as the B-Side on the Charlotte Sometimes 12" vinyl single in October 1981.
Robert introduces Charlotte Sometimes as "this is a song we've only ever done once live", nobody would have known Charlotte Sometimes at the time as the single/song was not released until 2 months after the show.
Robert plays 6 string bass in Primary and Faith, and sings while playing synthesizers in The Holy Hour,
The Funeral Party, All Cats Are Grey, and Charlotte Sometimes, Simon also plays synth during the intro to A Forest and plays bass synth pedals in Faith, most noticeable the last minute or so of the song.
Faith is an extended 10 minute version with ad lib lyrics and 6-string bass.
The last song Forever is a "jam" with ad lib lyrics based on the instrumental track Three from the Seventeen Seconds album, it was played to end most shows on the tour (similar to All Mine in 1982), and played here and there throughout
The Cure's history to end shows, but this Picture Tour for the Faith album was the last year it was played to end almost every show of the tour.
In addition to the 1981 radio broadcasts of which only mostly badly degenerated sounding cassette tape copies exist, a few songs were broadcast on Australian radio in 1995, then 6 songs broadcast on Australian radio in 2007, however the quality of the actual broadcast was poor, the sound was very thin and brittle, so this is an all round huge upgrade.
The 80's Canadian broadcast did not include All Cats Are Grey, and when it was played during the Australian 80's broadcast a ladies voice (I presume the DJ) spoke over the top of the song 1 minute before the end saying "testing testing 1 2 3 testing", so this is the first time All Cats Are Grey has been available witout the ladies voice speaking over the song.

Track listing is:

*All songs Australian source digitized from 1/4 inch reel to reel tape, except 02 - In Your House, 05 - Primary,
12 - Jumping Someone Else's Train and 13 - Another Journey by Train from master cassette tape recording of Canadian radio broadcast in the 80's.

01 - the holy hour (5min:00)
02 - in your house (3min:46)
03 - the funeral party (4min:47)
04 - m (4min:06)
05 - primary (3min:42)
06 - other voices (4min:58)
07 - all cats are grey (5min:34)
08 - three imaginary boys (3min:29)
09 - charlotte sometimes (4min:25)
10 - a forest (7min:24)
11 - faith (10min:22)
12 - jumping someone else's train (2min:40)
13 - another journey by train (3min:24)
14 - killing an arab (3min:00)
15 - forever (10min:47)

TOTAL: 1h:17min:25sec.

Based on setlists of the time it's most probable the whole concert was the following setlist below, they had recently started playing the yet to be released Charlotte Sometimes B-side Splintered In Her Head in between Grinding Halt and A Forest, but in the reel to reel recording you can actually hear the last second of Grinding Halt before A Forest starts, so it's unlikely Splintered In Her Head was played.
The show is most probably complete except for the following 7 songs : The Drowning Man, 10.15 Saturday Night, Accuracy, At Night, Fire In Cairo, Play For Today, Grinding Halt.

Recorded by dear DIMENEW from 3-4 meters center stage. Exceptional fine recording, a bit bass heavy (but didn't expect this from a Swans concert?) but everything else is
just perfectly good. Sold out crowd. Sorry, no pics or setlist...

Could this really been their farewell tour as announced? If so, the Swans pulled all the stops for a majestic performance in Koeln. I've been told that on the other side of
the road, at big Lanxess Arena, The Cure played...that seems like pop music compared to this long strange trip...So, enjoy! SB.

A Certain Ratio - Paard van Troje, Den Haag, Netherlands - 27.02.1982 (Flac)

Very good FM Broadcast, thanks to the original uploader on Dime.

Original Info File:

Broadcast on Dutch "free to air" FM radio (VPRO) in 1982
Recorded by Frans to cassette, digitised by Frans

A very rare (but probably incomplete) FM Radio recording of Manchester's finest post-punk/funksters, A Certain Ratio.
Recorded during a short Benelux tour at Paard van Troje in Den Haag, the recording does show it's age with a little low freq background noise in places, some interference (probably from the radio) and a little distortion during Knife Slits Water. There is also some evidence of pauses during some tracks (talk over edited out?).

All in all (& this comes from a serious collector of ACR shows), this is a gem! Thank you, Frans!!

Excellent sounding FM broadcast. Thanks to the original uploader.

Original Info File:

Many thanks to Realomind for sharing this with me, and to original taper SKOTF. Thanks and praises to them both.

I always think Richard Lloyd got a bad deal out of Television, with the spotlight always on Tom Verlaine who would never have been able to reach the heights he did without the able support of his fellow fender collaborator Richard. I rated RLs first solo album Alchemy as one of the really great semi power-pop albums, and I liked it a lot more than VerlaineÕs solo efforts (though comparisons are odious really).

This is a tape from a live gig as it was broadcast by local FM radio. It concludes with an interview done at the gig with Debbie Harry and Chris Stein who give their own verdict on Richard.

Adrian Borland Tribute page:

An introduction to the sound of THE SOUND

Prior to The Sound's formation Adrian Borland (vocals/guitar) had already released "Calling On Youth" and "Close Up", and the "One To Infinity" EP on Raw Edge (a label run by Adrian's parents) as leader of UK's Outsiders from 1977-78. Towards the end of 1978 Graham Green joined the band, replacing the original bass player, Bob Lawrence, and Michael Dudley (drums) was recruited to play alongside Adrian Janes (percussion). The new line-up recorded three tracks, which emerged on the Tortch label as the "Physical World" EP in December 1979, credited not as the Outsiders but as The Sound. They had progressed musically from their punk roots and were anxious to leave behind a name that still conjured up the atmosphere of 1977.

After the critical acclaim of the debut EP, The Sound signed to Korova Records, releasing a string of singles and two albums, "Jeopardy" and "From The Lions Mouth". These stirred a great deal of interest from both critics and public alike, establishing Adrian Borland as one of the most creative and mature writers of the post-punk scene. During 1979, Borland and Green created Second Layer, a harder, more experimental project that ran parallel with The Sound, releasing two EPs and an album. Sporadic releases continued throughout the '80s for several different labels with varying degrees of quality and success, but never managing to equal the halcyon days of 1980-81. The Sound also collaborated with singer Kevin Hewick on his "This Cover Keeps" EP in 1984.

Even now it's still hard to understand why The Sound never found commercial success. At their best, The Sound's excellent neo-pop bears favorable comparison to the Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen. Their debut album "Jeopardy" has a stark, beautiful quality, with the material given direct exposure rather than a production bath. Adrian Borland's vocals are sincere and gripping; the musical attack is both subtle and aggressive. The inconsequential Live Instinct E.P contains four songs recorded onstage in London, including renditions of the band's 1979 debut single "Cold Beat" and a few "Jeopardy" songs. "From The Lions Mouth" builds on "Jeopardy's" firm foundation with a fuller sound that faintly recalls U2. Produced by Hugh Jones (around the same time he did Echo's Heaven Up Here), it's bright, dramatic and sometimes ("Fire", "Sense Of Purpose", "Winning") powerful, a riveting album, the group's best.

Pushed by their label to sound more commercial, "All Fall Down" is the defiant reply, a stark, barren landscape of harsh tones and dark passages. The black, clashing music makes the challenging album an acquired taste, an ambitious, admirable exploration of the downside; not surprisingly, the record company sent the band packing. "Shock Of Daylight" a six-song mini-album produced by Pat Collier, is a strong return, building melodic, dramatic songs on a gutsy bass/drums drive, overlaying guitar, keyboards and even brass to create an attractively textured and varied sound. "Heads & Hearts" is even better, a quilt of bright colors woven with simple care. Though it lacks the knockout punch they'd shown in the past, with "Winning" or "Golden Soldiers" for example, the record's modesty and continuous flow make it a thoroughly engaging listen, a memorable album whose sum is greater than its parts.

"In The Hothouse" is a double live thriller from London's Marquee, with all the claustrophobic ambience of the club's packed space coming through on the recording. Live records this immediate sounding are hard to find. With the bulk of the material chosen from "Heads & Hearts" and "From The Lions Mouth", this is a superb introduction for the curious. "Thunder Up" is a middle ground between "All Fall Down's" emotional warfare and the later, more sensuous pop. Punching right in with one of their most exciting tracks, "Acceleration Group", the album is a rollercoaster ride through desolation ("Shot Up and Shut Down"), titillation ("Kinetic"), cynicism ("Prove Me Wrong") and profound beauty ("You've Got a Way"). Though the contrast can be jarring, unpredictability is a strength, and this is a bold up/down, hot/cold, built-up/knocked-down record most bands would not attempt. It was to be their last such uncompromising work; the group finally called it quits in early '88.

This is a professionally recorded show done for the BBC Rockhour. I have sourced the entire show from an original transcription LP. I am not an audacity expert so no 'cleaning' has been done to this show. It is presented as exactly as heard straight from the record. Unfortunately there is a scractch on the track Conversation so there is a point where it skips. I am not sure of the copyright of the original commercials (Scotch Recording Tape/Heath Candy Bars) so I have left the commercials off of this recording just to be safe.

I hope everyone enjoys this show!

RE-UPLOAD: The Cure - B-Sides and Rarities (Flac)

This is a huge fan made release picking up after the joining the dots compilation and a bit inbetween. A must have for all The Cure fans. HUGE THANKS TO WHOEVER DID THIS ONE.

The tracklist is too large for me to bother putting it here, check the photos of the covers ;)

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Seaport Blues Festival, Haifa, Israel - 23.06.1993 + Glastonbury Festival, UK - 25.06.1994 + Mark Radcliffe Show - 14.03.1994 (Flac)

Very good collection of FM broadcasts. thanks to the original uploader on Dime.

June 23, 1993

SOURCE: FM Radio broadcasts (no detail on lineage)

To continue with Nick’s tapes from the 90ies: The original idea was to release perhaps 1 show/tour; and those tape shouldn’t have been on dime in the last 2-3 years, should sound nice, and have some decent source/lineage info (there are many shows that I have with no source information on whatsoever!). Requests welcome :)

1993 is a difficult one! There were only 23 shows to begin with; and among 8 that I have, most lack source info or came from here :) there are just a couple exceptions and ONLY ONE is complete which made this Haifa Seaport Blues festival in Israel an obvious choice! This is an FM broadcast, and it sounds quite nice although I think someone edited out DJ host together with the music he was talking over. So in many places there are virtually no breaks between songs. Then again - would you prefer a DJ yakking? It’s a tough one!! There was some interesting technical difficulty during The Weeping Song - they stopped singing, but the rhythm section continues - seems like Blixa was switching his guitar or something. Than audience resumed singing and then Nick got everyone (one-two-three!) on the same page again :) Kind of fun to hear!
Now, to keep this going: my coverage of 1994 is limited to dime-sourced or unsourced shows, HOWEVER - this 1993 Israeli FM came with some very nice 1994 FM add-ons - from Glastonbury and Mark Radcliffe show - so I figured this particular 2xCD set really fits the bill!!

Enjoy! And anything Nick Cave you are willing to seed will be much appreciated as well!

Living And Breathing

Got this tape from a friend from Belgium called Vincent, one of the traders with largest collections of recording I have seen, in a trade back in 1996-1998.
Very good/excellent sound quality, from a FM broadcast.

DON'T SALE THIS BOOTLEG!!! It is just for trading/sharing/enjoying/tripping!!! Don't be stupid and make money with a bootleg. Respect the artists!!!

A concert re-broadcast on FM radio in the Netherlands, june 13th 2008 by "KRO's Legendarisch Live".
