Recorded from squelchy medium wave radio (that's what the Beeb broadcast pre-Peel R1 on during those days) here's the debut radio session for goths Gene Loves Jezebel. There was a subsequent Peel session on FM in September 1983 but this was commercially released. The Jensen session never has been.

Flamboyant and colourful, the Aston twins, Jay and Michael, fronted Gene Loves Jezebel during the 80's, earning early acclaim for their unique goth-alternative sound, and, later, by the MTV crowd as they went mainstream pop.

In 1984, after several line-up changes, the Jezebels played this show with bassist Peter Rizzo, who would become the band's permanent bassist for the next several years, and Marcus Gilvear on drums.

A solid performance that is light years ahead of the earlier material played in '82 and early '83, this show included early versions of Cow (Weep For Her), The Immigrant (Waves) and Always A Flame (Flame), all of which would appear on the 'Immigrant' album released in early 1985, as well as favorites from the 'Promise' album and, of course, 'Punch Drunk', a crowd favorite.

 note: a previous post of this show was just 50:03, missing tracks 14 and 15, and some of the encore babble. this is the entire concert, broadcasted live on WBCN as it happened. the only tape flip was after track 12 ended so a second master tape was copied for the last 6 tracks (3 songs) of the broadcast. Both the drummer and bassist changed in 1986 so they may be different here. The band listing here is the one as the Ritz, N.Y.C. 1986 concert broadcasted on MTV.

The sound in tracks 1, and 13-18 isn't quite as crisp as the rest, not sure why since tracks 1-12 are all from master tape (recorded on Nak. BX 100 cassette deck) but this is the full concert, including all the songs and radio announcer babble. It was the announcer's chance to be informative and let us know what fine songs we just heard played so well, or who played them so well.

But this was broadcasted on WBCN in the mid 1980's. In the shank of the ego era, the reaganera.
so the announcer encore breaks are all just babble. They are in here for the sake of completeness only.

There is some quality fluctation in the broadcast, but the signal is strong throughout. The band was popular enough at this time in Boston that a second Paradise show was added by popular demand on Nov. 9th. that one had a different opening band (Until December)

thanks to klingklang and onesomeone for help with band line up and other info. about this show.
the radio announcer (Nik Carter) says it's from the Palace in Hollywood but apparently it was recorded at the Roxy. by this time Jay's brother Michael had left the band, not liking its more pop oriented musical style.
this is probably about half their usual show but it is all that was included in this FM broadcast.

Gene Loves Jezebel - O2 Academy, Brixton, UK - 22.10.2011

I really liked this band in the 80's, but lost track of them for over two decades. Here it's the recording of their support slot with the Mish at Brixton. They are in fine form! Listening to the recording I learned that they played with the Mish in Lisbon also and that got me a littler pissed off, since none of the promotion of that concert refered to them...
